THIEVES are drilling holes into parked cars to steal fuel after panic buying sparked a petrol shortage.
Now, heartless thieves are cashing in by launching vicious schemes to steal fuel from hardworking Brits.
"They made a hole in my tank. Can you see? They made a hole and drained out all the diesel. A full tank of diesel," he added. He then describes how the van parked next to him also suffered the same treatment.
Up to 90 per cent of all service stations outside of motorways are now dry as Brits raced to fill up their motors and the PM was urged to "act now" to avoid even worse chaos
And was yesterday revealed that cops were forced to jump a queue in order to get vital fuel and an ambulance

Friction wouldn’t be much of an issue, probably no sparks there because of the tank metal alloy, and no heat because the liquid fuel inside would cool it. But if drilling a hole in a metal tank you would have to use a drill. And unless you are using a hand brace and bit it would have to be electric. Electric Drill Motor Brushes arcing + Gasoline + Oxygen = bad news...
The drill motor brushes arcing out in the oxygen along with the gas is a disaster waiting to happen.
Somebody drilled a hole in the tank of my old pickup and stole the gas years ago. I wire brushed the area around the hole and sealed it with JB Weld. It was still not leaking ten years later when I sold it. They now make a product that they call “JB TankWeld”.
A lot of tanks are made with 1/4” thick plastic these days. I know from experience that most adhesives do not stick to them very well or very long. There is probably some type of solution being used.
Gasoline has a fairly narrow flammable range. It only burns when the mixture is between 1.4 and 7.6 percent gasoline to air... That is why a car that will not start is often said to be “flooded”. The inside of a fuel tank that still has gasoline in it will typically be too “rich” to burn unless some fresh air has been inadvertently been added to the tank by changing temperatures etc... But they typically do not blow up like in the movies without some help from an incendiary device.
It is the fumes from gasoline that cause the most danger. People are often careless when using gas to light a brush pile on fire and end up catching the can on fire which if allowed to melt can put on a pretty good show when the gas starts spilling out.
Thief one to Thief two, while your down there, grab the Catalytic Converter.

The town my folks live in is getting hit hard with ram raids of high end lawnmowers and yard equipment.
For quick repairs they mama putty that you mix up by rolling it around with your fingers that will do a good wet plug on fuel tanks. I stopped about a 1/2” hole one time and the guy drove it 450 miles home.
The tank on my antique truck looked like it had mud splattered on it the bottom from all the sealer. After 20 something years I broke down and bought a new one.
Wonder how many ER hear the story my Bar-B-Q blew up?.
There was a rust hole that prevented me from putting in more than a half tank.

I had my own recent incident this past weekend where some people cut their way in to a building I use and made off with some tools and a small generator. Part of it was my own laziness about not bringing things home some evenings.
The generator had a slight glitch and I hope it fails or blows up.
I had the serial number but I don’t expect to see it again. Ditto the other stuff.
Since Saturday I have been moving everything I can out by myself. I have no help.
The bigger vehicle stuff is perplexing.
I have about half of that worked out.
