I got my first Pfizer shot last week of July - side effects were a slightly sore arm and extreme tiredness that night.

I got the second shot mid-August and later that night had chills, and extreme shivering for about 2-3 hours. I took Tylenol assuming I had a low-grade fever (didn’t take my temperature) and was able to go back to sleep. My arm was very sore.

The next day I had a headache and was lethargic. No appetite at all but did keep myself hydrated and took Tylenol every six hours. Slept most of the day into the night.

Woke up the next morning and felt fine, no headache, no lethargy, just a slightly sore arm.

It took me awhile to decide to get the vaccine. Part of my decision had to do with Beau’s daily thread and the posters who contributed to the discussion both pros and cons.

As a practical matter, you just can’t hide from COVID-19 forever -especially this highly infectious Delta variant. It is beyond containment.

Best to be as ready as possible, when our turn comes around. Clearly, being vaccinated provides strong protection from the worst of COVID - death, scarred lungs, huge medical bills.

how long was jesse jackson in the hospital and how’s his condition now?...

The last story that I saw about Jesse Jackson, was when his wife was released from the hospital. Their son reported that both had been hospitalized with serious cases (both in their late 70’s). I believe that both spent time in ICU.

When Mrs. Jackson came out of the hospital, Jesse Sr. Had already been out, but apparently was still receiving (possibly as an inpatient) rehabilitation. He had some other serious condition (s) complicating his recovery (I think Parkinson’s). It sounded like they were putting a brave face on a tough situation.

I certainly disagreed with Jesse Jackson politically, but the human condition of aging and illness, and the suffering that inflicts on the family, really highlights our shared human experience, and evokes my sympathy. I hope that their Christian faith, and God’s grace may comfort them.

Yes exactly. I did the propagation math in my head. Plus I am a fat guy with T2 diabetes. I talked to my doc who I trust absolutely and he was pretty plain spoken that the risk of side effects is worth it for the benefits of avoiding the actual illness. I studied the vaccine, its ingredients and determined it was as safe as it could be given the technology. I had hoped for Novavax but cases are rising here in Michigan and I want to still live my life. Since Pfizer was approved by the FDA, that was the one I selected. Some very slight arm discomfort 9 hours later but nothing else yet. My oldest daughter and my mother both had Pfizer with no ill effects. As an at risk person for complications it really just came down to a numbers game. The vaccine may slow propagation but it doesn’t prevent the spread and kids in the school here are getting it left and right and my youngest is afraid she will get it and give it to me. She wants no part of having to live with her mother, so I did what I had to do. We will see how the second one goes in three weeks.

Also I travel internationally for work and I don’t need the BS.

After age, overweight is the single biggest risk factor. Diabetes, just by itself, is among the worst of co-morbidities, for bad outcomes in a COVID-19 infection.

Thank God that you didn’t contract the virus before. Most of those now dying from COVID (over 2,000 yesterday alone), would likely have survived, if they had been fully vaccinated. Because of strong vaccination among those 65+, the profile of those in the ICUs and off to the morgue, has shifted to include significantly higher percentages of overweight patients in their fifties, and even forties. Overwhelmingly, overweight patients.

About eight days (on average) after the first shot, your chances during a infection start to significantly improve. In my view, getting vaccinated was the strongest protection that you could add.

I know that you have heard it before, and I trust that you have tried repeatedly - but this situation gives you a serious motivation to adopt improvements to diet and exercise, and reduce the fat load on your system. It might be a blessing in disguise. Really, the only way to fail, is to quit trying.

Ask your daughter to walk with you regularly. Cherish the time time together While you can, and talk to each other. Not only is it good for both of your health and fitness, I have seen several times how it strengthens relationships, to have such a long-running conversation. Great for the heart, in more ways than one.

Thank you. Yes we do a lot together and I have a treadmill now to help. I’m 55. I am also a chemist by profession so it took some time for me to come to the conclusion I needed to study this and take the plunge. And yes I need to keep working on my physique. I didn’t get this way overnight and it won’t go away overnight.

Thanks for keeping these posts going. I had hopes this damned thing would just fade away but it’s here until the mutations shift more towards common cold coronaviruses.

Me too. I was gleefully calling herd immunity when case numbers crashed through the Spring, but Delta changed the coefficients in the equation.

It’s unlikely that another variant could be significantly more infectious - Delta is already close to pegging the meter on that. The big risk is a variant that significantly evades existing immunity - from prior infection, vaccination or both.

The Moderna CEO recently predicted that world has about a year left , before we are really post-COVID for policy - based on accelerating vaccine production, and Delta burning through the unvaccinated. I assume that the USA will be ahead of many lesser developed nations, so it might be a matter of getting through this coming cold and flu season for us.

Same here. I was a little fatigued and took a nap - no big deal. My daughter who is obviously younger had 2 days of feeling pretty crummy - maybe a better immune system due to youth or maybe she had an asymptomatic case prior - she had been working in covid wards for a year

The daily COVID numbers are of course much more variable. On days such as today, COVID is probably the #1 cause of death in the United States with over 2k souls having met their maker.

Hopefully my Moderna shots (2nd shot was @ the end of March) are still going strong, as I’m going on a ~27 hour bus trip in a few hours.

I do have N95’ masks and will likely even double up with a slightly looser fitting KN95 on the outside if I have to sit right beside someone. One more N95 to adjust to try to keep it as comfortable as possible — which is NOT very comfortable over 2 hours or so. Am taking along a little pulse oximeter I just got and tested (looks to be fairly accurate, used correctly) — I’ve never noticed a problem, but I’ve also never worn a mask for anywhere near so long. (There will be some stops / breaks / chances to be outside & get a little relief, and the weather looks GREAT, so, at least there is that.)

Age and a couple other modest risk factors make this a wee bit scary, but, life has to go on, so, yeah, be as ready as possible and hope that statistically I fit the IL data and not the Georgia data...
