Johnny Depp believes that anyone can be "canceled" for any reason, whether or not they deserve it.
During a press conference at the San Sebastian Film Festival, where the Pirates of the Caribbean alum received the honorary Donostia Award, Depp spoke to reporters and Deadline about his perspective on the cancel culture phenomenon and how it has changed the entertainment industry.
“It can be seen as an event in history that lasted for however long it lasted, this cancel culture, this instant rush to judgment based on what essentially amounts to polluted air,” he began.
Depp has had his own brush with cancel culture amid his legal cases concerning his ex-wife Amber Heard, which include allegations of physical abuse from both parties.
“It’s so far out of hand now that I can promise you that no one is safe. Not one of you. No one out that door. No one is safe,” Depp added. “It takes one sentence and there’s no more ground, the carpet has been pulled. It’s not just me that this has happened to, it’s happened to a lot of people. This type of thing has happened to women, men. Sadly at a certain point they begin to think that it’s normal. Or that it’s them. When it’s not.”

He's a serious alcoholic and he's on my celebrity dead pool.
Pretty good actor, though.
He's a bit weird. Moved to France in early 2001 because he said he was disappointed in the U.S., and didn't want to raise his daughter here. Then around 2012 he moved back here because he didn't want to become a permanent resident, and pay taxes there. At the Glastonbury Festival in 2017, Depp publicly asked: "When was the last time an actor assassinated a President? He apologized not long afterward, claiming what he said had come out wrong. Last thing I knew he was in court defending himself against abuse allegations by his last wife Amber Heard. He attempted to sue a British news group that labeled him a wife beater, but the court there found in the favor of the news group. He's since appealed that decision, and as of August of this year, he's suing his ex-wife in a Virginia court for libel, based on the previous court decisions in the U.K. He's also had money problems, alcohol and drugs issues. Good guy? I guess it depends on what your definition of "good" is.
Many great actors that should better manage their unsolicited political opinions.
I avoid patronizing their films.
Well, I’m sorry to hear about all that mess. All I knew about him was the movies he was in and I liked him.
Hope he gets straightened out.
Kinda ironic isn't it?
Depp is a douche bag who made un-American remarks to a German magazine a few years back. Someone cancel him please!
“Is Depp one of the good guys?”
His monthly wine budget is $100,000.
So, ok, decide.
But he does coincide with conservatives on a few things. He owns guns and, asked about a sensitive political topic, said, "Why would anyone care what a man who wears makeup and plays make believe (for a living) thinks? About, anything."
Stuff like that. I like that.
he's definitely not someone you would want around your grandchildren.
What's the shtick there?
No right thinking person would want anyone like that around their children, grandchildren or themselves.
I read it was $30K/wk. But either way, the guy’s a creep.
Gottcha.
But...
As you describe him, he's a prime candidate for receiving the love, forgiveness, and grace of Christ.
I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.Luke 5:32.
Yeah, Jesus loves him but, we here at freerepublic know that the actor is an asshole who joked about assassinating President Trump.
So.....
I didn’t know about that and don’t like it either.
But, the guy is redeemable, and possibly a greater candidate for the Gospel of the Undeserved Favor of Christ than a lot of unredeemed “good” people running around.
Oh, I would agree.
You really should go tell Johnny that and see what he says.
But..................
Eph 5:11,12: .. have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them. For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret.
But you're off the topic. You asked why Depp is not suitable company. I told you. End of discussion. Don't bother posting to me again. I answered your question and am not interested in your babbling. If you think you can convert Depp to .. whatever, go for it.
But it appears that with enough money, one can be immuned from #metoo retribution.
Are your replies always this nasty or are you just having a bad day?
