The National Park Service has shared footage showing a 2,000-pound bison ramming another bison and briefly sending its rival airborne.

a car parked on the side of a mountain road

.

“Durin’ matin’ season, male bison can be mighty aggressive, though all bison ‘n other wildlife can be dangerous and give you a heave!” the park service wrote Sunday on Instagram. “Remember to always keep yer distance — 25 yards from bison ‘n elk; 100 yards from all other wildlife.”....

"Most tourists regard bison as docile critters, but bison can run in bursts of 30 mph and are surprisingly agile. Tourists are wise to afford them a wide berth"

Amazing how many dumb people get unexpected interactions with these massive creatures.

How many EXPERIENCED farmers are hurt every year by DOMESTICATED livestock? Animals, even dogs, can get a 'notion' and BANG, you are hurt or even dead!

To my mind, one of the deadliest inventions made by man has been the 'selfie stick'! Yep, get out of the car at Yellowstone for that lifetime picture! Oops, a rather short lifetime ...

WE, and I definitely INCLUDE myself, have become very urbanized with little interaction with true wildlife. Too frequently we take our perceptions from TV & movies and think it is real life. They see someone ride a horse and touch a wolf and think they can do the same!

Alfred, Lord Tennyson, put it clear in his 1850 poem, " In Memoriam A. H. H.";
Tho’ Nature, red in tooth and claw
With ravine, shriek’d against his creed –

Back in the sixties, a Yellowstone ranger had a campfire slide show at our campground.

One of the slides was of a driver who honked at the bison standing in the road ahead of him ... Bison-1, DeVille-0

Straight into the grill.

A 2,000 bison is basically the weight of a small vehicle. A small vehicle with a small brain that might feel threatened or riled if one beeps at it.

“Back in the sixties, a Yellowstone ranger had a campfire slide show at our campground.”

In the 80’s a French photographer (no selfie-sticks) gave his camera to another tourist so that the Frenchman could be photographed standing next to a bison.

The photo snapped was of the bison removing the head of the Frenchman and tossing it 60.’

I saw a bear two days ago on my street...I still live in Montana and YNP is just south...

It’s best not to mess with the wildlife...

Testosterone fueled bulls are very territorial during mating season. Imagine what a full-grown male Bison could do to you if he can knock a smaller (adolescent?) bull ass over apple cart. That said, Bison are NEVER docile. Even without it being mating season, If they perceive a threat, either individually or to the heard, they will react quickly and violently. I have a terrific photo of a Bison while being caught in a “Buffalo Jam” in Yellowstone. Stayed in the car, pointed the camera out the window and got a near perfectly framed shot. Fortunately, the bison don't see cars as predators (as long as you don't do something stupid).

I was watching an episode of “Mountain Men” with Tom Oar. He was hunting bison in the Yaak River Valley. He and his pal were armed with 50 cal rifles. Tom needed to hit the bison straight between the eyes. He succeeded.

Unfortunately, the rest of the herd then crowded around the dead bison, and they had to wait for them to move away - ain’t gonna approach a herd of pissed off bison.

When an animal weighs as much as a compact car, one wants to give it wide berth. (I could be talking about Hillary, but in this case Bison.)

Yeah after they dressed the dead bison, the pair ended up with about 1,000 pounds of useful meat for the winter season. And Tom used the hide for his handicrafted items, which he sells.

Worked with a young lady whose dad had a herd of 20-30 bison. The pasture was of welded pipe and no corners because it can be a stress point that the bison can use to escape.

Worked a small bison ranch, 14 female bison, two males, and a number of young. The one male was head honcho of course, and come mating season, the younger would, challenge him, which was quite the nightly show. These huge ‘lumbering’ animals can turn the speed on Ina flash. Every once in awhile, we had to go In and clean out the pens, but before we did we had to get them into another pen (which wasn’t hard, we just dropped some silage into the other pen- they go bonkers for it)- there was no way I’d go in thr pen with them- just way too unpredictable

Our neighbor had a ‘pet bison’ that killed him. He gored the fella, which he survived, buT never healed right and got infected over and over, and he finally died from it about a year later. Some folks just think they have a special connection with animals and that they understand them. Well, they might, for awhile, until they don’t that is

I know a dairy farmer who ended up with several broken ribs because a cow he was next to decided to turn her head and see what was going on.

She bashed him in the side but good.

My MIL and SIL live in Arden, NC (just outside of Asheville). Their suburban neighborhood has been overrun with bears the last 3 years. Before people go out of their houses, they set off their car alarms to get the bears to move across the street. And no one puts garbage in their outdoor garbage cans until the morning the stuff is supposed to be picked up.

They said several times they’ve seen joggers running up the street with a bear trotting behind them.

“They said several times they’ve seen joggers running up the street with a bear trotting behind them.”

Wow. Great post.

Some bears ARE bigger than others however - NOT that I want ANY bear to ‘interact’ with me directly.

Enjoy the Fall!
