At this point, the homeowner realized that those outside were trying to enter the residence and he may need to defend himself and his loved ones.

I wish I could add a single law to the books. When a homeowner is forced to defend his home, and kills the intruder; he should be compensated by the state the cost of 2 years of what it costs to incarcerate a convicted Felon (including all court proceedings).
My rationale is simple, odds are the deceased has been “in the system” a few times, the fact the homeowner is involved is partially due to the inability of the justice system to do its job; and this sort of immediate justice should be encouraged. It saves the US taxpayers a fortune in the long run
