Frankly it sounds like she was a bit of a nut and he was trying to be hands off and distance himself. Seems like good choices.
I can imagine a scenario where she pushed and pushed and pushed and he just lost it and slugged her. Maybe she died on the spot and he thought “oh oh”.
Don’t date crazy people. Run away. Sounds like he ran away “after” when they both would have been better off if he had runaway “before”.
After reading the account/police report I tend to agree with your analysis. She probably is/was a psycho that kept pushing the guy until one time he snapped and hit back. She probably fell and hit her head. Now, she is buried out in the desert somewhere.
OR, he kicked her out of the van and she got picked up by a predator. Then, that guy killed her and buried her in the desert.
The fact is IF she was alive, she would have called mom and daddy to come and get her.

My wife and I spend some time in way up in our 3500 mile drive around the western United States for honeymoon 23 years ago. There’s no small number of people to fall to their deaths in that area, often times mountain biking off of rounded cliff.
Watching those videos reminded me of the YouTube video of the hot crazy matrix :-)
