Well I see that number often and sometimes 99 percent is 99 percent. Sometimes it might be 95 percent not knowing some patients’ vax status. Sometimes people don’t want to believe a thing that they don’t want to. I don’t want to believe the numbers sometimes...but they are what they are.
No we don’t have them stacked up dead like cord wood, but We just had our worst day last friday with a 1/2 a dozen dying in a single day( several more that night. It’s been quieter since and I’m hopeful it’s past peak and we will see covid admit numbers start to drop again
80 percent of our ICU covids die and that has almost become a fixed value.
Some weeks,of the covid dead we have, it’s 100 percent unvaxxed. Sometimes it might be 90 per cent dead 10 percent uncertain because we couldn’t learn what their vax status is.(if that clarifies “the innumerate” thingy for ya...)
But i have no reason to lie and I’ve been in my field for 35 years. I’m also reporting on conditions that are particular to Richmond as of this time. They might change. Perhaps we’ll start seeing more vax covid breakthru numbers ramp up as vax strengths continue to wane as what seems to be being reported in other areas. We have had vax breakthru’s, but most of them got better.
Direct injuries from the vaxxes we haven’t seen in our ICU, or they died suddenly and never even made it to us...but I wouldn’t have access to those numbers.
Now we are not always chock full of Covid in our ICU and there are always a 5-6 beds open generally. The numbers flux. We deal with Traumas, burns, and other types of people, Sometimes we only have 3 or 4 covids and the rest are typical “type” icu patients. What makes it really busy is is if we have 2-4 patients on ecmo due to covid and nurses go 1-1 with them. That means the rest of us have to “triple up”, sometimes with critically ill vented patients. Some covid patient’s need SLED kidney dialysis that the nurses run at the bedside...they can keep us busy.
I have no idea if our Ped’s units or icu is dealing with an increase of male youth cardiomyopathies due to the moderna vax. If I hear something, I’ll let you know.
I don’t get into the dying of covid directly vs dying with covid arguments too much. I do know that the virus can be cleared from the body for a couple of week before some of them die, but that the damage done was too much for the body to recover from. The lung films look like Hurricane Larry had laid waste to their pulmonary cavities. The blood clots, liver damage, and anoxic strokes were a feature even before the vaccines came out.

My wife had an elderly relative who had COVID-19, was in the ICU and on the respirator for about 3 weeks. After being weened from that he showed gradual improvement… enough to be released from the hospital after almost 3 months in. He died about a month after his discharge. His death certificate didn’t say COVID… but it was COVID-19 that devastated his health and killed him. It just didn’t get the “credit” for that particular death.
This was before vaccines, unfortunately.
