The calorie is a reasonable fuel/surplus unit.
Rather than an either/or dichotomy, I think that eating when it is not needed for energy since you consumed calories, and eating foods high in fat calories, and empty carbs vs lean protein sources and whole grains and veggies, is behind most weight gain and lack of energy. And that it is still holds that if you consume more calories then you burn then you will gain weight, but while you could eat "junk food" and still lose weight if you still burn more than you expend (I overall did for many years), yet as one ages, the lack of energy due to fat and or empty calories being consumed (rather than lean protein sources, whole grains and veggies) will lead to weight gain as more of such food is consumed in the quest for energy which such food only provides a short term of energy for.
Allowing for differences in people, that is generally wrong.
Most people can eat far more fat calories without weight gain. Where does it go? If you are eating fat and your body is running on ketones it uses very different mechanisms to manage ketones than it does to manage blood sugar levels.
With blood sugar it is insulin that brings those levels down by storing it as fat.
If you overeat fat calories and entirely avoid carbs it may prevent you from losing weight, but for most people you won’t gain.
👍
***Scientists claim . . .***
Don’t you just LOVE this phrase? How many scientists?? Two?? That’s all it takes to make the statement “Scientists claim . . .”.
If “scientists” are like any other field (and they are), any group of “scientists” will most certainly have their share of losers. Therefore, if we can find two losers among the “scientists” who say anything, we can then make the statement that “Scientists claim” in order to back up ANY bogus argument.
Prove me wrong.
I share your humor.
However, the overarching question was, “Why?”
I emphasize the past-tense and reiterate my critique of the ‘scientists’...
Albion Wilde, thanks very much for the ping. Good and helpful information.
I tend to prefer some of both.
Im down 40 in about 4 months, but added time restricted eating. 16-18 hour “fasts” everyday.
From the insulin-carbohydrate model Twinkies exactly are the problem. Sugary, carb rich foods like Twinkies trigger the insulin reaction that leads to fat storage and more hunger.
I think most of us do. The really high glycemic no-nos aren't even listed -- but there is a little footnote about them at the bottom of the charts.
I went through the same thing, logi-cal. I’m tall and have always been on the lean side and then, out of nowhere, weight started piling on. I couldn’t understand it. My eating habit has always been once per day in the evening. I did not overeat.
Spoke to my doctor about it who also happened to know about a lot that was going on in my life at the time. His answer as to what caused the sudden weight gain was stress which increases the cortisol level which ... causes weight gain.
After my life settled down somewhat, the weight just fell off without any effort on my part.
You just validated some of many statements in my book.
I’m glad that it worked for you; it was not so in my case.
Calories or glycemic index played no role in both of our cases; I think that’s notable.
Well I have the opposite problem......putting weight back on because I’m a fast burn. I’ve weighed pretty much around 112 my whole life. At 5’2...until I lost 2 inches when I broke my back...and went down to 101 pounds! Yikes! Now I’m about 117 as I’ve been less active.
Never dieted or watched what I eat either. But have not been a snack eater like chips etc. just don’t like them much. My downfall in summer is coke ice-cream floats and sundies. In winter I eat more so my weight is higher.
So true about Winter, caww. I know you mean Summer regarding the ice cream, BUT ... nothing better than a tasty beef stew followed by some ice cream, curled up on the sofa with a movie. :-)
I had a stimulator placed on my spine last June. About a month later, I could not believe what I saw in the mirror. It looked as though I’d aged 100 years overnight and I was skin and bones. During my struggle to regain some weight, I worked out a couple of great recipes for cookies and candy. But it was the Key Lime and Lemon Icebox pies that helped get the weight back on. Oh yeah, let me not forget the help from Blue Bell’s Moolineum Crunch ice cream. I gained a little bit too much, to be honest, and am now trying to get it off.
So you DO know what I’m talking about! Hats off to Ice Cream though!
