Phil Collins Says He Can’t Play Drums Anymore
Vulture ^ | 09/13/21 | Devon Ivie

We interrupt your daily “Invisible Touch” listen to share some upsetting news about Phil Collins, who revealed in a new interview that he’s no longer able to play the drums due to deteriorating health. Speaking with BBC Breakfast alongside his Genesis bandmates, Collins confirmed that he won’t be behind the kit for the band’s upcoming The Last Domino? world tour, and that his son, Nic, will be drumming in his place. (Meanwhile, his daughter, Lily, is famously in Paris.) “I’d love to, but you know, I mean, I can barely hold a stick with this hand. So there are certain physical things that get in the way,” Collins explained about his current state. “I’m kind of physically challenged a bit, which is very frustrating because I’d love to be playing up there with my son.” Collins also expressed skepticism that he’ll ever tour again after The Last Domino? concludes its run in December. “We’re all men of our age, and I think to some extent, I think it probably is putting it to bed,” he said. “I think just generally for me, I don’t know if I want to go out on the road anymore.”

Collins has been plagued with serious health issues over the past few years. In 2016, he revealed that he was living with dislocated vertebrae, nerve damage, and foot fractures, which left him feeling like he was walking “on sticks” and impeded his ability to perform. For The Last Domino? tour, Collins will solely be taking on vocal duties for Genesis’s catalogue of hits

Which is really a shame because Tony and Steve created fantastic soundscapes together, I still can’t still which parts are coming from Steve and which are coming from Tony.

I cringe when I hear Darryl playing The ‘Firth of Fifth’ solo.

He also has one of the biggest collections of Alamo memorabilia ever assembled.

...which is probably much larger than the number of Alamo artifacts actually in existence.

Yeah, that interplay between Hackett's acoustic guitar and Banks' piano was just such a classic Genesis sound. Last half of Can-Utility and the Coastliners is one of the places where they pulled it off perfectly.

Anthony Phillips was pretty good at that too -- Stagnation holds up as well as anything they did.

Yeah, Buddy Rich used to look like he was going to have a heart attack when he was really wailing.

Check out the link I did at 81.

Her version of The Lamia literally brought tears to my eyes.

I seem to remember him making the same claim about ten years ago.

I had read that some of the items he donated and collected were of suspicious origin and couldn’t be directly attributed to the Alamo. I suspect he was duped.

Occupational. Really debilitating. I see a lot of string players with stiff hands drummers with bad shoulders and wrists electric bass players with shoulders that I have slung 13 lb basis on them for years. Ballet dancers have terrible problems but there is a cure that I have heard of. But only heard of.

It’s call the Alexander technique. I’ve never been able to find out any information on it whatsoever except a few vague testimonials and I wonder if it really even exists. From what I understand it’s supposed to be very good therapy. Does anybody here know anything whatsoever about the Alexander technique?

I think they use it in Australia, but I’m not sure.

I like the vocoder on the intro vocal.

“But Keith Richards (77) can still play a mean guitar.”

Richards plays in open tuning. Might as well be playing a banjo. Wait... there’s a lot of really old banjo players too!

It’s the open tuning!!!!

How long do organ grinders live???

Keith is probably a better bass player than a guitarist, he played bass on a couple of the Stones hit songs.

I also have Tony’s solo albums, I liked “A Curious Feeling”.

But this is a fantastic song with Fish, of Marillion.

That's fantastic. Always thought the Lamia was one of the underrated gems on that album.
