You don't just "walk off the job" in the military. Heck even for a civilian fed, there is paper work to file, out processing that takes weeks. The fastest I ever saw someone get out was in about one month, and it was a woman who was pregnant (married and having 2nd baby) who was having massive health issues and decided the stress of the job was just too much and got out on a medical. Most medical discharges take many months.

Even if you commit a horrible crime, you'll sit in jail, but your paperwork for a discharge will take months! The only way to get out of the military quickly...is to die.

And then the paperwork for your family takes months...
