FORT LAUDERDALE — A Chicago woman was arrested Monday night after telling airport employees that her luggage on the plane had a bomb in it, according to Broward Sheriff’s Office.
Marina Verbitsky, 46, of Chicago, a man and a minor with her were running late for their flight from Terminal 3 at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. Three airport employees told the group they could not board the plane because they were late.
Verbitsky then claimed there was a bomb in her checked bag, deputies said. She was arrested.

The flight was delayed until 2 a.m.
Verbitsky faces one count of false reporting concerning planting a bomb, explosive or weapon of mass destruction and is being held in Broward Main Jail pending bond. The man and minor with Verbitsky were not taken into custody, the Sheriff’s Office said.

This "bomb ploy" was fairly common among Miami's Cuban community back in the 70's and 80's. Of course, the flight was delayed, which suited those who were going to miss their flight. (And they were the first suspects selected by police for investigation).
The first Easter after 9/11, we went to see my sister & her family in Oregon. At the airport on the way home, they still had fully armed National Guard. TSA decided my then two year old daughter was a terrorist and had a woman do a search on her.
My wife was pretty upset about it while we were walking away and I told her it was over and done with. She finally said something to the affect about my daughter having a bomb. Looked at my wife and told her to shut the f up.
If they’d have heard her comment, we would have been in a security office for 6 hours and missed out flight. Most upset I’ve seen my wife but it shut her up.
Did the scam work?
Dumb move used for decades to keep the plane at the gate for late arriving passengers. This one takes the act to new depths, and puts her on the no-fly list forever.
