Know your Nautical terminology

Irish pennant
A loose untidy object about a ship or naval installation, especially the end of a line left hanging loose & out of place, or a line trailing in the water.

Irish pennant is one of the earliest nautical terms I learned from sailing and racing with my father. I was told the Irish were considered to be very sloppy sailors.

My first introduction of the term was during my Freshman year in High School NJROTC during my first uniform inspection.

Of course it was always addressed as IP and referred to any minor loose threads on your uniform - seams, buttons, belt loops, fabric edges...darn things appear everywhere.
