When a grieving family saw an unknown mourner at the funeral home in northern France where their relative was lying at rest, they thought nothing of it.
The woman, in her sixties, said she was a friend of the deceased, so they left her to pay her respects at the open coffin - or so they thought.
But when they came back later, the deceased had been stripped of her jewellery: her necklace, ring and earrings had all vanished, French media report.
The family raised the alarm with the police, who investigated and soon identified a suspect: a woman living not far from the funeral home, in the town of Liévin. They detained her and found the missing jewellery in her possession.
But that was not all. They were soon able to link her with the theft of a wallet from the body of a man at the same funeral home, earlier on the same day, Tuesday 24 August.
When the suspect's home was searched, police also found a stack of recent death notices. Included in the notices were the access codes for family members to enter the individual rooms where the coffins of their relatives were reposing.

WTH?? A Body with a wallet?!
Just in case we’re all wrong and and you CAN take it with you.
Talk about bones of contention...
OMG....the man was NOT dead.
New word: jewellery.
The article said “ the body of a man in the same funeral home.” I don’t think we’re referred to as a “body” unless we’re dead.
Sorry....bad writing.
REALLY bad writing LOL!
How rude!

What is the difference between jewellery and jewelry?
Jewellery is an alternative spelling of the same word. It is the preferred spelling in British English, while jewelry is the preferred spelling in American English.
She was ghoulish and foolish.
Didn’t a pope do that?
That’s the British spelling.
Yes it is
Does this call to mind to anyone else the segment in the old Boris Karloff horror movie, “Black Sabbath,” where this woman steals a ring from the corpse of a medium and gets haunted by the mediums ghost?
You tell us.
At a friend's mother's funeral in July a tall black woman walked down the isle during the "sermon" part of the service wearing a long black dress and fancy flip-flops. She stopped near the casket, paused, then turned around and walked back out. To me it looked like something out of a movie.
The deceased's son told me she does it all the time trying to find out if there's going to be a reception that she can crash for a free meal.
