Florida woman ‘rampaged’ employer’s computer system after getting fired

TAMPA, Fla. — A Florida woman deleted thousands of company records and wrote profanities in her employer’s computer system after she was fired from her position as head of human resources.

Medghyne Calonge was found guilty of one count of intentionally causing damage to a protected computer, one count of accessing a protected computer and recklessly causing damage, prosecutors said.

Calonge, 41, worked in St. Petersburg, Florida, for a Manhattan-based company, which was not named. She was fired for failing to meet the minimum requirements for the job she was hired for. In one instance, she downgraded an employee’s access to a computer system after an argument.

After she was fired, but before she was escorted from the building, two employees saw her repeatedly hit the delete key on her computer. Calonge later logged into the computer system and for two days “rampaged” the system, deleting 17,000 job applications and resumes, and leaving profane messages written in the system.

Prosecutors said the company spent two years and $100,000 creating the computer system Calonge wiped. The company spent another $100,000 investigating and rebuilding it. The company never fully recovered the data.

“Her actions wiped out information vitally important to the employer company, and cost the company money and time to repair,” U.S. Attorney Audrey Strauss said in a statement. “Now Calonge awaits sentencing for her crimes.”

They should fire their IT staff or contractor. No regular user should be able to do that. Even if someone trashed the system, a restore from backup should be just a couple hours away for something that size. You could walk into my house and re-format the drives on any one or two of my computers right now, as I type this, and it would only cost me an hour or two. That’s my personal files. If I were running a business I’d be even more secure... Off-site multiple copies, etc.

Unless she leveled the building even onsite backups would work in this case.

True. But a fire or tornado can wipe out your data center. But if you are either cloud based or have an offsite backup and a hot site you are dead in the water.

HR as usual failed to let IT know in a timely manner. When the discussion that is happening with her superiors is happening her access should be disabled.

Lot of shops walk out IT folks after they give two weeks notice but most IT folks are smart enough to do their damage way before they give their two weeks.

Back then it was the Personnel Dept.
How is it that idiocy and spitefulness become prerequisites once the name was changed? Now I’ll admit that dealing with Personnel was not always a day at the beach, but dealing with HR was impossible.

It sounds like this company was stuck on stupid from the very top to the very bottom.

There should be standard procedures for firing folks, and everyone involved should be experts at their piece. This is not that difficult.

On the day I retired I sat in a conference room with one IT person and one HR person and we went through a checklist of my returning stuff to them—computer, ID access, physical keys, etc etc etc.

Then they shook my hand as they walked me out the door.

Easy peasy.

As soon as an employee gives a two-week notice at my company, I plug the termination date into our app (I'm in management) and that morning the employees entire access to our system is terminated. All that is left is to conduct the exit interview, collect the laptop, the mobile device and the HID card that gets them into the building. It's a pretty smooth and efficient process.

On occasion, I waive the two-week notice immediately, such as if I suspect the employee is moving on to a competitor or may be disruptive to the other employees. Employee still gets the two weeks of pay but he/she is out the door in minutes.

Reminded me of this Leftist, Rebekah Jones who was a rabid Orange-Man-Bad Leftist working in the Florida Department of Health, and came out in the media saying Florida was falsifying its COVID data.

They fired her, and boy, did she ever turn out to be a typical Leftist. Stalking. Sexual abuse. Insubordinate.

When you read what she did at Florida Dept of Health, made changes to lock everyone out of the system, and when her boss told her to undo what she did, she said "Okay." and went on vacation for a week without doing it.

HR did a which hunt on Teams last December, the HR chick kept hammering me to respond.

Then she asked: Do you prefer to be called Deaf?

I told her; You can call me Mr Smith or Smith.

I then laid out some Corp misconduct and started a Dumpster Fire in Corp.

I will set off another Dumpster Fire at the next safety stand down.

I told my immediate mgr to stay out of it.
