Lest anyone think you exaggerate:

I went into two stores in IL today without a mask - Menards and Autozone - and no one said a word. Screw them. If Walmart and others are requiring them for entry again, I'd like to suggest some civil disobedience. Wear your your mask to get in, then remove it and fill your cart. If anyone says anything about wearing a mask don't argue - simply leave the cart where it is and leave the store. If enough people did this it wouldn't be long before Walmart got damn direct of putting countless carts full of groceries away!

I saw an interesting thing done here in rural Missouri at more than on store, including walmart.

The employees would hang out right at the entrance with their mask pulled down and carry on a conversation with some local person they knew and they would stand at a normal talking distance, not 6 feet. Every time I went to walmart I saw that going on and then one day they took down the roped off entry path. Few weeks later they took down the mask required signs and shortly after that they peeled the arrows off the floor that no one was paying attention to.

We never had a state mask mandate and I never wore one even when walmart had the signs up. There were only a few of us who refused to mask at first but by late Spring, pretty much everyone ditched them. There’s still some chain stores that force their employees to wear them.

I did see one good mask use case. The kid making sandwiches at Subway. They stand right over your food and ask you questions. Out of three employees and half a dozen customers, he was the only one wearing a mask.
