The “Thousand Talents” program.
It’s working.
They are the operators and builders of the satellite network (it doesn't yet exist).
Motorola’s Iridium system worked well, but it used/uses handsets that were large, in an era when very large cell phone handsets were the norm. It never made money, was going to be reentry-burned-up but the US state dep’t reportedly got money to keep it around, due to global coverage and signal security.
How much more does it cost than terrestrial hookups like Verizon or AT&T?
Satellite phones are very expensive. Best to rent one if you're traveling to Greenland or someplace remote.
Does that mean an iPhone user with satellite hookup would have to pay an additional $99 a month to use the service.
If that’s the case very few will sign up.
The iPhone GlobalStar service has not been priced yet as far as I know. I imagine it will be expensive. The $99/month thing is for satellite internet via StarLink. Nothing to do with iPhone.
It’s a commercial choice, right?
You can buy the deluxe or the not so deluxe.
I’m sure if it works properly, it would be a nice feature for a small number of folks who are “remote” all or some of the time.
Yes, I missed your reference to Starlink. I wonder who will win out between Starlink and Globalstar, and there are others as well.
I wouldn’t bet against Musk.
Wait til you get the bill for those calls.
Yes, but it sez here they’ve got 48 satellites in orbit and in operation, compared with Starlink’s curren 1800 (goal is 42,000).
Another FR later thread on the same subject is here: iPhone 13 will be a satellite phone that will let users make calls and send texts even if they're out of range of cellphone tower network
If you want on or off the Apple/Mac/iOS Ping List, Freepmail me.
I think main hardware updates -- besides this possible satellite-based 911 / text feature -- will be in the Apple Watch. However, the AR (augmented reality; as if we don't suffer with Demagogic Party AR as it is) seems to be the big reveal this time.
Prosser's buddy at iUpdate demos the AR easter egg in the California Streaming announcement of this event.
Apart from the usual Amway-rally-like response, I don't think this event will rise much above snoozers. I might be interested in the iPad Mini, assuming it gets rolled out, but I don't like the ongoing tease (not just in tech topics), and for the cash, it's better to get a SIM version of the iPad Air, if that's available.
As a consequence I'll probably bail from the stock at some arbitrary peak, then chew my way back in after it drops back to circa 150.
It took me a long time to warm up to this guy, but he's become a big fave. And no, I don't have any YT subscriptions.
Special thanks:
THANK YOU to Corina for letting me dress you up as Judge Booty, putting up with me during my most stressful report ever, and spending the hours next to me tweaking everything about the episode to make it perfect.
Thank you to Ian for working the late nights with me to make sure we got these renders just right, and thank you for being being SUCH A CHAMP at keeping this a secret.
Thank you to all of the sources who worked on this report just so tech fans could see something so cool, so early.

Apple Trial Ends in Mixed Verdict After Fortnite-Maker’s Monopoly Allegations
12:03 pm ET September 10, 2021 (Dow Jones)
By Tim Higgins
...”The Court does not find that Apple is an antitrust monopolist in the submarket for mobile gaming transactions. However, it does find that Apple’s conduct in enforcing anti-steering restrictions is anticompetitive,” the judge wrote.
Epic, the maker of “Fortnite,” had brought the lawsuit, claiming that Apple was improperly using its monopoly power and harming competition. Appeals were expected, regardless of the judge’s ruling.
The high-profile case highlights a broader concern about online platforms and digital commerce. Regulators and lawmakers in Washington, Brussels and beyond are seeking to rein in big tech companies. The trial proceedings reverberated around the tech world, as the likes of Alphabet Inc., Amazon.com Inc., Facebook Inc. and Microsoft Corp. watched for signs of how their worlds might change...
Apple also told the judge that forcing it to let companies, such as Epic, bypass its app-review process and allow for software downloads on iPhones outside of the App Store would open users up to cyber threats.
