Apple's newest iPhone will offer technology that lets it connect to satellites, allowing users to make calls and send messages when they're out of range from a 4G or 5G network, according to a new analyst report.
TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said the new device will feature a customized Qualcomm chip that allows for low-earth-orbit (LEO) satellite communications, effectively making the next iPhone a satellite phone, according to a report seen by MacRumors.
The analyst said Qualcomm is teaming up with Globalstar on the chip, a customized version of Qualcomm X60 baseband chip.
In this case, a customer of AT&T or Verizon would be able to use Globalstar's service with no additional contract or payments.
At present, Globalstar has 48 LEO satellites in operation, according to Aerospace Technology.
In addition to the technology potentially being a part of the next iPhone, Kuo said it could be a part of future Apple devices, including the oft-rumored augmented reality headset, the Apple Car and other products.

It's not a bug, it's a feature!
Unlike the “vaccine”, it won’t be mandatory.
Damn, great minds think alike. I was going to say that!
Hahah wait until those first bills...
In a way I welcome it.
Where my facility is, the area is a cell dead zone and getting MFA to work on some phones (droids) is beyond frustrating. No cell service, no text.
None of the higher ups want dedicated lines in.
When does the iPhone Lucky 13 hit the stores?
Still not buying one. The head sodomite can stick it up his.......
Apple doesn’t even own a single LEO satellite as far as I know.
“won’t be mandatory.”
That’s what you think.
Remember when the feds mandated that all cells use GPS so we could be “safe” since 911 would be able to figure out where we’re calling from?
After that mandate, all companies were happy to jump on the bandwagon because it meant everyone needed new phones.
Emergency services were not, however, quite so quick to jump on the bandwagon and adopt any tracking ability. I believe many still don’t.
But the feds can track you.
Now, to fill the holes, they will just make the sat feature mandatory, which of course will need to also be 5g.
I don’t mean the feature, but one neither has to own or carry a cell phone at all times.
Get a burner if need be.
That said, I have zero belief the government cares about me.
I’m essentially nobody.
iPhone Ping.
“Remember when the feds mandated that all cells use GPS so we could be “safe” since 911 would be able to figure out where we’re calling from?”
Nope.
Dankeschön
I’ll never buy another cell phone again in my life. I had to buy a 4G phone because my plain, ordinary 3G cell phone was being interfered with by a network booster in the neighborhood. The icon for the booster was showing up on my phone screen, and it would only fall off if I drove 4 blocks down the street. Calls wouldn’t go through, and I couldn’t manually update my roaming capabilities, unless I drove far enough that the booster icon disappeared. I hate cell phones in general. Hate smart phones even more. I bought the cheapest iPhone they had...a 5 SE. I’ve had it for at least 8 years now. I don’t do anything on it, other than make and receive calls, send a rare text message, search for Bing rewards on the Safari browser, and access free Pandora in my car if I’m traveling, which isn’t very often. I do no email, banking, and no purchasing on it. I’ve never even used the camera. And Siri has been turned off for as long as I’ve had it.
“Emergency services were not, however, quite so quick to jump on the bandwagon and adopt any tracking ability. I believe many still don’t.”
Wrong.
Yep.
I never leave home.
Never have, never will.
You can tell because my phone shows that if you want to look.
Why I even have food delivered.
Nope couldn't have been me ";^)
I’d be ecstatic if they could plain old cell phones to work well. Every single call is garbled, I can understand one word out of three, or the call is dropped after a few minutes. That has been true across 30 years with multiple phone brands (Motorola and Apple) and multiple carriers (Sprint, Verizon, T-Mobile). The damn things stink when it comes to voice calls and it has gotten a LOT worse with the introduction of 5G.
I’ll bet the new satellite service will be just as unreliable, poor quality and buggy as plain old cellular service.
It reminds me of Windows and the Office Suite. MS never fixes the myriad of bugs in the old stuff while introducing new, largely useless features.
They don’t own any cell towers, antennas, or cellular switching equipment, either. That’s not how the industry operates.
