Starlink to offer voice over IP
Ping-a-pa-loosa!.................
That makes logical sense, if Starlink and can keep to the latency targets they are talking about VOIP calls should work fine.....

I used to hunt a lot on some property on the Al TN line. The property was about 400 acres. There was only one spot, about the size of a tennis court where one could connect to cell towers. We called it the Phone Booth. Now a couple of miles away and connections were good and solid.
They’ve been growing an economy-of-scale advantage with their ever-more-capable SOCs in both phones and computers. They got their wired protocol accepted by the entire industry, and now are going to destroy whatever’s left of the already thin margins of its hardware competitors, which has been likened to the margin on bananas.
Most CPU production is in Asia, regardless of manufacturer — apart from Intel, which is going down the memory hole faster than the Russian space program.
They’ve reserved most of the manufacturing capacity of TSMC’s 5nm process, and TSMC is going to roll out 3nm — Apple has reserved that as well. The projection was that Apple was buying more than half of TSMC’s entire production capacity for 2021.
AMD also avails itself of TSMC’s OEM capacity, btw.

Exactly so, and QCOM needs the economy of scale and standardization that the iPhone (and only the iPhone) can offer.
I’ve been using VOIP over StarLink for 4 months. Works fine. Just gotta have the StarLink Dish.

Ummm, YEAH.
Every time I read about "satellite phones" I laugh and wonder how the hell they propose to supply the required power and carry around a 2-foot dish antenna....
Answer: Cell tower relays. They just don't talk it about them...
“I sure think it would be great to have satellite connectivity. I sometimes go hiking or traveling in remote areas and this would be very nice to have.”
Does the person you’re calling also have to have a satellite phone?
I figured it would the latency numbers Starlink promotes would certainly allow VOIP calls with little to no issues...
But the article that started this thread indicates Apple has a future Iphone that will make satellite calls, which means they need a way to broadcast up to a satellite, I can’t imagine Apple would make a big bulky phone like an Iridium to accomplish this which makes it very curious to me how they will get this done...
So, how does Globalstar make money from this. Does the user have to buy a separate subscription to their services in addition to what they already pay for say Verizon or AT&T?
I've used satellite phones frequently in wilderness settings for over 20 years. GlobalStar sucks, but Iridium are outstanding. Very dependable. I don't consider them bulky at all.
No. You call their landline or cell phone.
Will Biden update the Obamaphone users with this capability?
You’re right the iridium phones are not bulky but compared to a slimmed down Iphone there is a difference...
I think the satellite phone will require a directional antennae.
I’d venture to say that most all the engineers that work for Google at the development level are from China or those parts.
They are here on visas and when they return home they bring what they have developed back with them.
I would think you’re right, how apple does that will be interesting.
