I wonder what is more offensive. Is it African or American? I agree with Teddy Roosevelt though that there are no hyphenated Americans.

Which part is offensive? The African part or the American part?

It’s time for thin-skinned pity party groups to make up their mind... and I’m not talking about black people - I’m talking about white liberal ‘elite’ University know-it-alls...

Of all the black people I have known they always referred to themselves as black, And of particular amusement was supervising a new college graduate from Bahamas had to check off boxes with “African American” as race. He is neither African or American. And Africa and America are locations. This stuff is so stupid,

"University tells students not to use the term "African-American" because it's now offensive"

I always have found the term offensive, except when used in reference to people who really are African-American. Like Charlize Theron, Dave Matthews, Gary Player & Kim du Toit.

“Black” is probably the LEAST accurate description of all. A very small percentage of African-Americans have skin that approximates being “black,” and millions obviously have mixed-heritage that renders their skin very similar to Hispanics or even tanned whites. Millions are like KC QB Patrick Mahomes, i.e., nowhere near being “black.” The word “Black” seems to mainly serve the purposes of sloganeering.

Most blacks in this country are mixed with white anyway. The ones from africa are very dark.

Maybe we should just start calling people that are citizens of this country, American and leave it at that.

I went to an overwhelming black inner city high school in the late 70s/early 80s and I learned quite a bit about the culture and never once heard the term African-American. (Very rarely you would hear the term Afro-American). Negro and colored were considered old fashioned but not necessarily offensive. (Ads for the United Negro College Fund were ubiquitous). And many of my friends lived in the “ghetto,” not the “community.” Then, when I was in college in the early 80s, I remember reading in the New York Times that, effective immediately, blacks would be known as “African-Americans.” It sounded silly then and I guess it’s already becoming a dirty word.
