Ed Asner, who played a gruff newsman for laughs and for drama in the classic TV series “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” and its spinoff “Lou Grant” in the 1970s and 1980s and was honored with seven Emmy Awards, died on Sunday at age 91, his family said.
Asner, whose diverse credits also included a key voice role in the acclaimed 2009 animated film “Up,” died at his home surrounded by his family, his publicist told media outlets.
His family confirmed the death on the actor’s Twitter feed, writing, “We are sorry to say that our beloved patriarch passed away this morning peacefully.”

He played several characters on The Untouchables TV series.
Comment withheld, it’s the least one can do.
Who cares....
Dead commie.
I remember that.
Even have the boxed set.
It was my lunch time entertainment.
Now I am running Remington Steele.
That was my first thought, too. I hope he repented before he passed into eternity, because he was devoted to Leftist views during his life. That’s no way to live.
Asner was in “The Girl Most Likely To” with Stockard Channing.
The average IQ in hell isn’t likely to go up today...
??? His father’s name was Morris David Asner. I think you are thinking of Carl Reiner, father of Rob Reiner
I saw the same thing!
For a moment, I thought the last word of the headline read “finally”.
You mean beside his brains??
Prayers to his family...
Now the Commie gets to meet his hero Joseph Stalin. Gonna be hot.
This news makes me sad.
Should have happened much earlier.
He was good as Lou Grant. I didn’t watch his drama much, and as soon he started spouting out his politics, I was repulsed.
I don’t know what he did in the many years since, but I really liked the animated film “Up.” He provided the voice of one of the characters and he was easy to listen to. And I didn’t have to look at his face
I guess they’ll have to find someone else to be the voice of ‘Granny Goodness’.
I’m always curious how families know when their loved ones are going to die so that they can assemble and surround the death bed. Nowadays, every obituary you read indicates that the decedent was surrounded by family and friends.
well he lived a long life....peace to his family....but he was one gigantic leftist arse that is for sure.
