Well, I don't want a forever war either. That having been said, you need to be able to show something for your 20 year investment. Maintain a base. Make a show of force to the Taliban. Heck, we still have bases in Germany and Japan. End the war, but let everyone know who still is in charge.

This is not what you do to maintain power and influence in a dangerous world. Just the opposite, actually.

You have to have the will and want to win first. WW2 took about 4 years against mighty, technologically advanced, brilliant, incredibly strong and motivated countries. We should have obliterated the responsible parts of Afghanistan...including nukes goddammit..right after 9/11 then split and dare them to try it again! Never ever send the troops into a meat grinder again.
