The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.
This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.
NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

Eating them that way these days, pretty plain. Thanks!
I have to flatten them first. I was thinking of using the tried and true flattening method of the crop circle artists - a 2x4 with a hole through each end, via which a rope “handle” is attached. Then I hold onto that rope while stomping the board over the weeds! This stuff is between 4 and 7 feet high. :) I am 5 ft. tall.
Oy that’s tall. Good luck with that and Diana with your corn.
“...and Diana with your corn.”
Beau has it all picked for me. Tomorrow morning is ‘Shuck & Blanch-A-Rama’ around here.
We decided to watch the Little League Baseball playoff and pretty much nap this afternoon. ;)
I did decide to add a pat of butter and some cream to each package. I think it will be more than delicious. My old ‘roommate’ Gary used to preserve corn that way and it was always amazing. (He lived up, I lived down; we shared the garden plot.) ;)
That corn is a week overdue, so I’m doing SOMETHING to salvage it all. My bad - but the weather (HOT & HUMID!) and the fact that I was up to my BUTT in tomatoes had a lot to do with it.
“I’M ONLY ONE WOMAN!” LOL!

Many of us believe in “waste not, want not”
We never grow corn because it would just draw in the deer. We have a favorite farm stand that always has the best and sweetest. I could eat it uncooked even. We put up 2 dozen which will be more than enough. We cut it off the cob and food saver it raw. In the middle of the winter we just warm it up in a saute pan. We both watch our carbs so we just don’t eat that much anymore. We have 8 quart bags frozen. It will be plenty.
Thanks! I went out there this afternoon, had a good look at the situation, and tried using a board to help flatten the weeds.
Hahahaha. That’s the sound the weeds made when I did that.
So, I grabbed the wide plastic leaf rake and went back out there, and used that to push the weeds over, then I hopped on it to mush them down. That worked better, but I still have a long way to go.
I love fresh corn! I wish that you could send some to me!
I grew some in my old garden here once. I had my husband go and get me a few dozen minnows - then I tossed a few in each hole before I put the corn in. I’m evil.
I had just three little rows, and it was some kind of heirloom corn. It had pink tassels and was so sweet. Growing a LITTLE bit of corn is so fun, and if I get my weed situation fixed I may just do a little corn next year.
So far, all seems well, except for my lingering cough. That, however, is nothing unusual for me after any respiratory illness, due to my asthma.
Today, we finished picking & shelling the black-seeded beans. The 5-tray Excalibur just barely holds them all. It’s set on 95F, since I don’t want to kill them.
We also harvested 20 pounds of cukes today, plus one large zuke that was stuffed for dinner.
I even managed to make a trip to the Post Office & grocers; and helped with a load of laundry.
Finish our laced hot chocolate, and head for bed.
I’ll let you know what my yield is. I’m going to shuck it in the cool of this morning - after a little more coffee! :)
It was another miserably hot week here in Central Missouri. We got one small rain shower, but it didn’t amount to much.
I got a bit of weeding done in the garden, and picked several gallons of pole beans, but I don’t get too ambitious when it’s pushing 100° outside. Forecast is for cooler temps and some rain this week, which would be good. It’s time to get a patch worked up to plant some green salad.
If you need a pick me up here is some corn shucking music, Flatt & Scruggs -

LOL! Great background music! :)
The potato skins will tend to slip off as they thaw. But other than that, cooked potatoes freeze nicely!
Thanks for the tip, I did 3 yesterday, they vacuum sealed nicely, I like to eat the skins so we’ll see how they turn out.

Just think in a couple of months we’ll be enjoying the fiber thread!
As long as it doesn’t involve canning of any kind, I will be HAPPY!
Lawn is almost done - stopped to get my Roasted Tomato Sauce into the oven so it can roast while I finish.
Beau just informed me that the plums are finally ready, so they can go into the crock pot for plum butter today, too.
We need to go to Platteville tomorrow so we are hitting Menard’s for more canning supplies. Just in case. ;)
I am still stocked up on lids since Y2K. Need rings though.
