You realize McCain lied all of his life about being shot down by a SAM, when he was actually downed by AAA. Oh boy, he had the full story played out.
The official Navy report and a pilot who filmed the shootdown affirmed it was AAA, not a SAM, though a wingman on the same mission was downed by a SAM and taken as POW.
Why would he lie? Maybe because getting downed by AAA was due to not following ROE, being reckless. This was his first combat mission from the Oriskany, the carrier his father got him reassigned to after the Forrestal disaster. Determined to prove himself…driven. Why?
He also panicked and did not follow ejection procedure, which led to his severe injuries and lifelong debilitation,. Nor did he ever acknowledge that Vietnamese villagers near his target went into the lake and saved him

On Oct 26, 1967, soldier and civilians captured pilot John Sidney McCain who was flying an A4 that crashed near the Enfu? powerplant. This was one of ten planes that were downed that day.
