CHICAGO (WLS) -- Chicago will mandate city workers get a COVID-19 vaccination, Mayor Lori Lightfoot announced Monday.
"City employees are absolutely going to be required to be vaccinated," Lightfoot said during a press conference Monday afternoon.
The announcement came hours after the FDA announced the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine had been granted full approval in the United States.
Lightfoot added that the city has been working with labor unions over the last several weeks to finalize plans. A formal announcement is expected as early as this week.
"We absolutely have to have a vaccine mandate," Lightfoot added. "It's for the safety of all involved, particularly members of the public who are interacting with city employees on a daily basis. It's important for colleagues to also feel like they have a workplace that's safe."
The city government is Chicago's third largest employer, with a workforce of more than 30,000 people.
More companies and hospitals are moving ahead with vaccine mandates with the number of COVID cases on the rise particularly with the more contagious delta variant. But already, some unions are digging in their heels.
"We are not just going to roll over and play dead for the mayor," said John Catanzara Jr., president of Chicago's Fraternal Order of Police. "She's not going to force it down our throats without a fight. And we will take it to the courts if necessary."

I have no idea how this “vaccine protects from virus” thing became so popular here. Please listen carefully, vaccine does NOT protect you from anything. Vaccine does not build bullet proof glass shield around the body to prevent virus from floating into lungs.
Unvaccinated and vaccinated will inhale exactly the same amount of virus load floating near them. The virus does not ring a bell either upon arrival inside respiratory system. Only after the virus has established itself in lungs, and starts replicating, and begins to destroy lung tissue is when body becomes aware of presence of virus. It will then send an army of white corpuscles and anti-bodies to the effected location. If the vaccine did it’s job and has created extra load of anti-bodies, that increases chances of killing the virus before the virus can create more harm.
I read somewhere that Chicago has had more people die of lead poising than Covid since this spring.

Let me see if I understand this properly.
Person A feels that they need the vaccine to be protected, so they get vaccinated. However, Person A doesn't feel protected unless Person B also gets the vaccine. And if Person B refuses to get the vaccine, Person A shames them until they do.
Let's take this a step further.
Person A, who is vaccinated, can still catch and transmit the virus, but is not subjected to going through daily/weekly testing.
Person B, who is not vaccinated, and who can catch and transmit the virus, has to go through daily/weekly testing and potential quarantine.
Why does Person A not have to go through testing and quarantine if they can still catch and transmit the virus?
And to go even further than that:
Person A is vaccinated and, even though they can catch and transmit the virus, can walk into any number of locations that state they will only allow the vaccinated inside.
Person B is not vaccinated and, even though they may test negative for the virus, are not allowed inside any of the locations that state they will only allow the vaccinated inside.
Wanna piece this together now? It boils simply down to segregation and discrimination with no real basis for doing so.
1. Person A is vaccinated.
2. Person B is not vaccinated.
3. Both Person A and Person B can catch and transmit the virus.
4. Person A does not have to get tested, but Person B does.
5. Person A can go wherever they want, but Person B cannot.
6. Person A is allowed to live their lives, while Person B cannot.
7. Person A perpetuates the shaming of Person B by stating that Person B needs to be vaccinated for Person A to be protected.
If your shot works, why do I need one? If your shot doesn't work, why should I get one?
Think about it: A politician demands that an adult citizen obey them, even if the citizen thinks it's not in their interest to do so -- "Do what I say or I'll punish you!" -- and adults go right along with it.
To me, this is truly amazing ... and it's no way to live ... at least as one who thinks they have control of their own life!
Just wait till people start getting Smith + Wesson disease.
