Actually, half of the sugar molecule is fructose, so just a bit more sugar all the time to excess does this, according to the article.

Cane sugar contains as much fructose as HFCS. The “high fructose” label distinguishes HFCS from regular sorn syrup (which contains no fructose).

Back in the day soda was sweetened with cane sugar. Not HFCS. Interesting to note that Colorado is today the thinnest state in America but it is fatter than the fattest state (Mississippi) was in 1990.
