News Clippings:
The USA has extended restrictions on non-essential travel at U.S.-Mexico and U.S.-Canada borders crossings to Sept. 21. The restrictions apply to those who are traveling on foot or in vehicles, ferries, rail or to coastal ports of entry and to those traveling for non-essential purposes. The restrictions do not prevent commercial air or sea travel.
Trump booed after telling supporters to get Covid vaccine at the Cullman, AL rally on Saturday (21 Aug), saying “I recommend taking the vaccines. I did it, it’s good, take the vaccines.”
Kentucky's Supreme Court ruled on a separation-of-powers case that means the Legislature can limit the emergency powers granted to Gov. Andy Beshear, a Democrat. The order dissolves the state's COVID-related state of emergency.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott tested negative for COVID-19 four days after he announced he was positive with a breakthrough case. “I am told that my infection was brief and mild because of the vaccination I received,” he said.
Jesse Jackson, 79 (fully vaccinated, first shot in January), and his wife, Jacqueline, 77, have been hospitalized after testing positive for COVID-19.
Biden approval rating on pandemic dips, an Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research survey found that 54% approve of the job he has done with COVID, while last month that number was at 66%. The drop is largely because of Republicans' and independents' lowered approvals.
Outspoken vaccine skeptic, Conservative talk radio host from Nashville, Phil Valentine (61) has died a month after his COVID-19 diagnosis captured national attention and led to a public change of heart on vaccines.
Cardinal Raymond Burke is off the ventilator and recovering.
The Hill reports; People who received J&J vaccine will likely need booster, surgeon general says... He also told Keilar that "mixing studies" are underway to evaluate the effects of taking one type of vaccine followed by a dose of a different shot... "As soon as those studies are done, we'll have more to recommend to J&J recipients about the timing of a booster and which shot they should get."
Maryland has achieved the milestone of vaccinating 80% of adults with at least one dose.
Americans are getting checked for the virus at a pace of more than 1 million tests each day, according to Johns Hopkins University. “Positivity has climbed to highs that we haven’t seen since the big winter surge,” said Jennifer Nuzzo, an epidemiologist and senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security. “Positivity for me, above all, is a measure of whether we are doing enough testing. As it starts to creep up, that suggests we need to cast a wider and wider net to find infections.”
The Guardian (UK) reports: Raging Delta variant takes its toll as Philippines runs out of nurses. Bad pay and conditions at home and demand for Filipino nursing skills overseas have left the country with a soaring death rate. The Philippines is one of the world’s biggest suppliers of nurses, with 17,000 leaving to work overseas, including in the UK and the US, in 2019.
New Zealand officials are now warning that they will probably extend the Auckland lockdown, which is set to expire on Tuesday, as their outbreak expands to 72 active cases.
Almost 5 Billion Shots Given - More than 4.93 billion doses have been administered across 183 countries. That’s enough to fully vaccinate almost a third of the world’s population.
Yahoo reports: Hospitalizations of COVID-19 patients are the highest they've been all pandemic in the state (of Washington)... The average age of hospitalization has dropped significantly, and local health care providers are seeing patients get seriously ill with the virus even if they have no underlying health conditions... The average age of the roughly 100 COVID patients hospitalized in Providence hospitals in the Inland Northwest is below 50 years old... More than 90% of patients locally and even statewide who are hospitalized with the virus have not been vaccinated against it... Getz (chief medical officer at Providence Health Care in Spokane) said that even if patients recover from the virus and are discharged from the hospital, they are not healing quickly. "They are sick for a long time; they could have compromised lung or heart capacity forever as a result of this disease, and these are things that should be statistically unlikely if you have had the full course of vaccine."... In previous COVID-19 waves, kids tested positive, but locally, few got seriously ill . In the current wave, some children and teens testing positive for the virus are requiring hospital-level care.
Orlando Sentinel reports: Florida’s peak of the delta wave could be days away, university models show. One model created by University of South Florida researchers predicts the state will hit the most daily infections by Aug. 24, bringing about 23,000 that day. A University of Florida model predicts a similar timeline, projecting a peak to come at the end of last week or sometime next week... But hospitalizations and deaths spike days and weeks after symptoms arise... “I would think through a lot of September we’re going to see a lot of hospitalizations and deaths and strain on the system,” Longini (a biostatistician who helped develop the model) said. “By October, things should be back down to a more endemic level like we’re seeing in May and June.”... The USF model predicts the high mark for hospitalizations will come about Sept. 8, where about 19,000 hospital beds will be needed for COVID-19 patients... The projected high (for Fl Hospitalizations) is about 1.5 times the January peak, and coming weeks sooner... We’re very close to herd immunity (which they estimate at 90% for Delta) if no other mutant arrives and if immunity is lasting,” he said, “it could be the endgame."
Toyota is scaling back production in North America and Japan as the surging coronavirus pandemic in Southeast Asia and elsewhere crimps supplies. It will cut back production at home by 40%, affecting 14 auto assembly plants in the country. In North America, Toyota said it expects August production to be slashed by 60,000 to 90,000 vehicles. That would equate to a production cut of between 40% and 60%.
Imagine a giant jar of one billion M&Ms and the government insists that every man, woman and child in the US needs to reach inside and eat 2 of them but .05% (500,000) of the M&Ms are laced with a fatal amount of cyanide, would you still be willing even eat just one? How about 2? Or 3? Or continue to eat one every 6 months if the government insists it’s necessary for the common good and welfare of the nation?
I hope the vaxx-holes are smug and happy! I now know two who will ultimately lose their jobs because of jab mandates. My company very well may do the same. All of this is disgusting.
As I’ve said many times and continues to hold true. The vaccine helps. I’m not saying reactions don’t happen but I am not seeing it in my experience.
I do not support mandating vaccines or masks btw
If by "vaxx-holes" you mean people insistent on the vaccine, almost to the point of pushing it, then I am confused by your statement. If they are vaccinated, why would they lose their jobs? Asking for a friend who has no intention of taking the vaccine.
The numbers are confusing. The total administered does not equal the sum of the first shots + the shots resulting in full vaccination, even with the J&J added. Is the J&J included in in total administered? It would help if you broke the categories down via a Table.
It seems unreal that there are people I know that are still getting infected with Covid, not Delta, but Covid-19.
These are people that we just assumed had Covid at some point but were asymptomatic. They assumed it too.
Almost exclusively 16-48 year olds.
How the heck did they avoid it all this time?
Over the last 2 weeks, out of 7 cases of people we know, one severe case is hospitalized, one moderate case being treated, five cases of mild but annoying cases getting through it.
Gee, with a survival rate of only 99.9%, you can never be too careful...
Welcome to the new world order...
Just stay strong.
We are on the right side of this evil.
Again with only just a 99.9% survival rate you can never be too paranoid.
Just not true but I just give advice. Not orders
I just left an 80 year old lady I have taken care of for years. She’s on vapotherm with 100% O2 at 30 liters. O2 sat is 90%.
I have an 80 year old friend who was in excellent shape (double vaccinated) on a ventilator..saying prayers.
“The total administered does not equal the sum of the first shots + the shots resulting in full vaccination, even with the J&J added. Is the J&J included in the total administered?”
I believe J&J is included - but that it is double counted. One shot is both a first shot, and fully vaccinated.
So roughly, add first shots to fully vaccinated, and subtract the number of J&J (so it is only counted once). That brings it closer. The rest is likely reporting errors.
There is a new question, of third shots. They have already started administering them, but where are they accounted for? They need to update their report format, to reflect those.
There are other things that help but they were/are suppressed.
I think the two sentences are meant to be taken separately.
1,120 died Thursday alone.
Overwhelmingly preventable through vaccination.
Hospitalizations:
Deaths:
Roughly 1000 unvaxxed are dying/day in the US.
Lots of conservative talk show hosts, politicians and their spouses.
Many of them said the same things people here say on social media before they got sick and died.
