Venice is planning to change rules for visitors by 2022, including charging for access and setting entrance quotas.

The Italian city is one of the world's most popular tourist destinations and measures to control the influx of tourists has been debated for years.

But according to Italian newspaper Stampa, visitors may have to reserve access in advance and there could be turnstiles installed at the main access points of the city's historical centre.

“Any city right in water can smell dank at times....”

Especially when they discharge their sewage into that water.

>>I will not go there again until the stop this nonsense

The crowds or the charge?

I won’t go either if the crowds are always a thing; could care less about the an entry fee, but the last thing I want to do if I visit a city in Europe is to stand in a crowd of Americans and Asians (I don’t mind Americans OR Asians, but I don’t want to go to Italy and not see and experience actual Italians and Italian culture.).

There are less and less places in the world I am interested in traveling since most major ‘destinations’ are overrun with foreign tourists - maybe I’ll just buy an RV in retirement and head into the wilderness instead, where there are not as many tourists...)

Go in by boat. Kayak. I’ve done it a million times in places where it’s tge only way

You put in where you can easy. And paddle in

Knowing the Italians. The canals are probably regulated too

Interesting

https://bestveniceguides.it/en/2020/02/28/sewage-in-venice-how-does-it-work/

My dad was a pioneer in privatizing public wastewater and water utilities

Every municipality in the world dumps raw sewage when it rains a lot

It overloads pipeline systems and plants

Even Miami which is damn clean otherwise

Venice is hard to bring up to snuff

The historic part

They used a septic system forever called gatoli

Some places I’ve lived dump in streets

Belize city

Freetown Sierra Leone

Manaus brasil

When I lived in Manhattan some areas dumped directly to east river

I think much garbage is still barged to a canyon way offshore

I know sewage sludge is

I agree. Well worth 10 Euros to enjoy Venice without the mob scene.
