The use of Germany’s buses, trains and trams has plummeted during the COVID pandemic, with many opting to go by car instead — and according to a new study, the trend shows no sign of reversing any time soon.
The previously unpublished study, which was carried out by Berlin’s Social Science Research Center (WZB) and the social research institute Infas, shows that people are continuing to choose car travel over trains and buses in spite of the easing of many COVID restrictions and a return to public life.
In Spring 2021, almost half of all public transport users were instead traveling by car — compared to just a third at the height of lockdown.
The trend, in fact, is moving in the opposite direction of the climate targets for the transport sector, which dictate that the number of people using public transport needs to double over the coming years. […]
The fact that car use has increased in spite of the easing of lockdown restrictions suggests that factors other than the pandemic are at play in the migration to private rather than public modes of transport.
These include inflexible schedules and problems with routes that might make it less a less attractive option for people who drive. …

Back in May of this year, the gov’t admitted that from the 2020 period...the public transportation sector (buses and trains) were missing 7-billion Euro. Even with some return to normalcy in 2021, I’d go and suggest another 3-billion for this year being ‘short’ as well.
Nothing to do with “migrants”?
Having lived in Germany both before and after the muslim and african invasion, that is the unspoken reason people are going to private cars. They are violent smelly loud jerks that paw at white women and the Polizei don’t do a think about it.
For this particular issue...Covid brought in curfew situations, home-office work, home-school, and just a fear of getting Covid onboard buses and trains. They actually roped off buses where you couldn’t come within six feet of the driver.
They were running some bus routes where the load was 10-percent of what it’d normally be (especially in Dec 2020 to Feb 2021).
Remember as well...party districts shut down with the curfew business, and no one was hanging out after 9 PM.
It will be safer, more convenient, and probably save energy if every family got to putter around in their own autonomous vehicle; vehicles that could link up to become trains when advantageous.
I see nothink. I hear nothink.
Considering how expensive the Germans make it to own and operate a car, their public transit must be a disaster.
Just wait until you are forced to drive an EV.
No thank you.
Who wants to sit in public transportation with the fragrant crowds. Except for long distance air travel (which sucks in its own way). It is for losers.
Meanwhile, nowhere on the planet are vaccine passports needed to use mass transpo.
Bars, restaurants, gyms, stores, but not in crowded busses and subway cars...
Go figure.
Could it be that people just don't believe in what the government is telling them about this disease and its ability and/or desire to combat it.
The fact that car use has increased in spite of the easing of lockdown restrictions suggests that factors other than the pandemic are at play in the migration to private rather than public modes of transport.

I wonder if the MSM, screaming at people for the past 18 months, that Covid is going to kill everyone, might have influenced behavior.
To me, an “autonomous” vehicle is one I can have sole control of, not a computer.
And Germany was one of the countries that had the state take over the railroads very early on. They have no concept of having railroads in the private sector, something that was very successful in the USA until the left’s grip on power after WWII became stronger (the left being represented not only by the Democrats but also the “New Republicans” who later were colloquially known as RINOs).
To each his own. But the vehicle isn't "autonomous" if you control it.
Yes it is when you have sole control; it is subject to your autonomy, not the computer’s. We aren’t talking “Herbie” here. Cars are meant to be an extension of the human, not an extension of some computer under the control of robot software designed (and controlled) by a human other than the driver.
If only there was a single number that told us honestly how much total energy something uses, and indirectly how much it pollutes. Oh, wait, there is. The price!
Price is proportional to total energy consumption and pollution production. Government transportation is so horrendously expensive it must be heavily subsidized, which means it uses vastly more energy and pollutes more. To find out where, just follow the money. Money is really just data about energy consumption.
It's all over but the leftist crying. The CCP virus killed government transportation.
Fun Fun Fun on the Autobahn
