Someone help me out here. Is “finely-tuned watch” an expression that is used much? I’ve heard “finely-tuned machine.”

Are watches “tuned” like pianos and engines and some other things?

If they are tuned, are they “finely” tuned? It seems to me a watch only needs to run. It either does or doesn’t. I’m sure there is more complexity to the gears than I realize, but are the guts of a watch more complicated than a piano’s innards or a car’s?

Or are watches just “set?” I haven’t used a watch in a long time.

Watches with gears and springs were "tuned". They had a tiny lever inside to adjust the tension on the springs, which adjusted the timing of the action.
