The decline to 7.39 million people is the biggest since the local population saw the first signs of a decreasing trend in the middle of 2020, by 0.3 per cent year on year.
Before that there had always been steady growth since mid-2003, with an increase rate ranging from 0.2 to 1.1 per cent leading to a population of 7.5 million by the middle of last year.

A government spokesman said the number of residents leaving Hong Kong was “conceptually different” from emigration, as some might be going for work or study.

No doubt they have volunteered for Xi’s work camps to help the ccp.
What’s alarming is they are most likely coming here.
Some prominent HK YouTube channels have moved to London. I think the trend began in 2019. These are non-political BTW (photography). I can see that every foreign connected Hongkonger leaving, or trying hard to do so.
Those I know of are headed for London.
These are valuable people, highly educated and with superlative business skills.
Its feeling rather like when the top tier of German Jews (and dissenting Germans) started emigrating from Germany in the mid 1930s.

Hong Kong is just another Chinese city now, the CCP takeover is pretty much complete. If you’ve got the means to get out you’d be crazy not to.
