The creators of the irreverent animated television series “South Park” are buying Casa Bonita, a quirky restaurant in suburban Denver that was featured on the show.
Matt Stone and Trey Parker said in an interview with Colorado Gov. Jared Polis on Friday that they had come to an agreement with the current owners of the restaurant, which closed to diners in March 2020 as the pandemic took hold. It declared bankruptcy in the spring.
“We’re excited to work with everybody and make it the place we all want to make it,” Parker said.
The Lakewood restaurant has been in business since 1974 but gained wider recognition when it was featured on a 2003 “South Park” episode and when the Denver Broncos announced some of their draft picks there in 2018.
The Mexican restaurant is known for its decor, which includes a pink facade and large indoor waterfall, as well as its cliff divers and skits that feature an excitable actor in a gorilla costume. But some have noted there is room for improvement.
“The one area that we would all love to see an upgrade — and I think I speak on behalf of everybody who patronizes Casa Bonita — is the food could be a little better,” Polis said.
“I think it could be a little more than a little better,” Stone added.

Hope they reinvent the food and reopen the Tulsa store.
casa bonita in tulsa?
Ive heard Matt and Trey are closet conservatives.
They hate Republicans, but they really really hate Democrats.
I’ve been to Casa Bonita twice: in 1976 and 2017. It seemed a lot bigger in my memories of going there as a kid, but it’s still a unique place that should continue operating.
The food isn’t bad, but it’s greasy-spoon, cooked-by-a-high-school-kid quality, and there is much room for improvement, as the new owners are aware.
I’m hoping they make a go of it, because I’d like to go there again someday if I’m in the vicinity.
Back when it was open, My girlfriend and I went in there. Girlfriend was Latino and spoke Spanish. Saturday afternoon. The place was empty. Walked past a sign that said...if you are here a 45 min wait. And the sign has a menu of food for party of 8 or 12 or six or something weird. Eventually got to the cash register and looked for the hostess. None. And we were supposed to already have our menu filled out. Got the heck out of there. Went to a small Mexican restaurant on Sheridan Blvd. Girlfriend spoke Spanish with the waitress and my order which included green chili was delicious. A hostess and menus on the tables would be a plus. You know, like a real restaurant.

That’s fine with me.
The food was “meh”, and the interior had grown quite - used.
Hopefully they can get the interior renewed and up the food quality. I’d love to go back. It was a neat place in its prime - despite the mediocre fare.
I’d say the odds are against them long term but I’m sure that they’ll make - ahem - a splash in the short term.
The margaritas could definitely be improved upon .
I hope that they cleanse the place of the stench that was there.
Right leaning libertarians.
I think it actually started in Oklahoma City, went there quite a bit 50-55 yrs ago. They added others and also had Crystal’s pizza. The Okc location closed probably 30 yrs ago.
Trey and Matt and I were of the same film grad posse from Littleton but I only knew Matt. I went to their private one year celebration of SOUTH PARK and they sat and shared their experience, saying it was the hardest and longest hours of work that they never could have imagined. They also shared their regret about giving up practically all their rights to SP merchandise. However, it was really fun watching Trey’s dad getting absolutely blown away by watching his then newly successful son sign autographs. He would generously draw a little “Stan” with each one. Of course, I was just “too good” to ingratiate myself to him by asking for one. Much regret, now. I’m really happy for their success and it’s no surprise they would buy the Casa. Great!
