As of August 14 the Union is not doing well in Virginia, while in other states the story is not as bleak.
As of August 14, I count 34 total engagements to date -- 13 Union victories, 15 Confederate victories, 6 inconclusive -- producing a total of over 10,000 casualties, of which over 1,600 were killed.
The breakdown by state is:
- In Confederate states 13 total engagements:
- South Carolina - 2 engagements (Fort Sumter), one a Confederate victory, the other inconclusive (surrender ceremony).
- Virginia - 9 engagements, 7 Confederate victories, no Union victories, 4 inconclusive.
In Union states/territories 21 total engagements:
- Maryland - 1 engagement (Balt riot) a Union victory.
- Western Virginia: 7 engagements, 6 Union victories, one Confederate victory.
