Pragmatic Trump would have worked out a realpolitick ‘ arrangement” with regional powers ( Pakistan, India, Russia, China. the ‘stans) to help control what comes out of Afghanistan that really affects our national strategic interests: radical anti western terrorism cloaked in islamic fundamentalism, and heroin both as an export and as a source of funding for terrorism,

Frankly the War Colleges need to stop training the hivemind of strategists in MacKinder’s geopolitical prophecies and move waaaay beyond trying to “ contain” Russia in the heartland by putting American troops and proxy military elements and weapons in places like Afghanistan, Syria, Ukraine,

China is the big piece of the puzzle with its “New Silk Road”, or “ One Belt” plans. For years our very smart political establishment either praised or ignored this scheme. But you can see how they are progressing, one project after another, all according to long term plan. Maybe our really smart political strategists thought China would never pull it off, and besides, hivemind strategists hold dear two certainties: the Russians and Chinese were “ never” going to ally …and there are moderates in Iran just waiting to emerge if we don't rattle the cage.

Or the Khyber Pass retreat by the British in 1842. This is a place where empires go to die.

Can anyone tell me why our military left ONE piece of usable equipment behind?

Debate all you want about was right right to stay or go, I want to know why we didn't take our equipment with us when we left or put it in a pile and blow it up with the mother of all bombs.

Either Military Intelligence is an oxymoron or this is something sinister.

I agree with the withdrawal. I think it should come with a caveat though Slo Jo won’t do it. The Taliban should be told they can have that crap hole but if they so much as cause one incident against America or American interests, they will be bombed further back into the stone age than they already are.

Bush let himself be talked into a much broader and amorphous mission in Afghanistan and Iraq…. to change the “ conditions” of societies in failed nation states that led to “ hopelessness” and rage that led to terrorism. To try and rebuild them using Western ideals and institutions as models.

While the western-educated native elites there were sold on that….they really are not much of a societal force outside of their elite circles and institutions in large urban centers,

Had Bush just gone in and cleaned out the terrorist networks and jnfrastructures, then left, we'd have had a nice big parade …and kept the powder dry for repeat action as necessary. But the depth of the rot that erupted on 9-11…well, they could never even be honest with us about it, because it might embarrass some “ allies’ ( Saudi .,,cough cough)

The Pentagon Generals actually disobeyed Trump and failed to implement his lawful order to withdraw with delay and obfuscation.

If Congressional Medal of Honor recipient and WW2 winning supreme commander in the Pacific Douglas MacArther could be fired by Truman for insubordination (and maybe politics) than any general can. Cerainly there isn't one in the Pentagon now who has that sort of cache.

Trump should have given the generals a specific timeline and fired them one by one until they met it. Plenty of Colonels that would welcome a promotion. But he didn't, he let them run out the clock and they all still have jobs and are patting each other on the back about how they really run the country.

Yep. My friend’s son came back with pretty much the same impression. These people don’t want to change. They like the way they live. Once we leave they can get back to raping and killing each other with great abandonment.

The biggest mistake we made was trying to nation build. We pissed away so much American blood, time, and money on this rat hole; it’s disgraceful.
We should have kicked the talibans behinds so bad, they would never have wanted to attack us again, and let it serve as a reminder to hadji to never try it again. If they were to raise their hands towards us again, we destroy them completely.
That is how wars are supposed to be waged and won.

“Assure the individuals in the Taliban that if they attack us again that they personally will die, and then let them have their rotten country.”

A single sentence that brilliantly, accurately describes what our approach to that country should be.

I would say America learns nothing but there are forces that love this shit as in the political, military and corporate complex if you will. They have collectively made Trillions in a crisis on the blood of civilians and soldiers. 9/11 is now no more than a fading event of some people did something tragic. I can’t imagine being in NYC this 9/11 which is no more than a shell of itself in a libtard 9/11 pity party and wasted words as the Taliban flag will be standing tall in Kabul.
