I would do it however works best for you. When I’m walking on level ground but using the cane I hold it in my left hand since my injury is my right foot/ankle. It balances me. If I’m walking on a slope where my hurt foot is downhill I hold the cane on that side to keep me from rolling that foot down the hill.
Don’t worry about rules. Do what keeps you from getting hurt.
