When using a cane, it belongs on the side with the injured or weak foot/leg.
Duh. Logic 101.

Proper Positioning:
When standing up straight, the top of your cane should reach to the crease in your wrist.
Your elbow should be slightly bent when you hold your cane.
Hold the cane in the hand opposite the side that needs support. For example, if your right leg is injured, hold the cane in your left hand.

My physical therapist adjusted my cane and told me how to use it. He corrected the height first and then said to hold the cane in my left hand to take the weight off of my right injured ankle. If I want to take the weight off my left leg/foot to hold it in my right hand. The cane goes on the side opposite of the injury.
