United States Wins the 2021 Olympics - Final Standings

Scores for first ten teams are below in Comment #1, based on Value of Each Medal Category (Gold=5 points, Silver=3 points, and Bronze = 1 point) x Number of Medals in Each Medal Category.

But first a word about the Olympics. The Olympics is one of the few chances for nations to come together peacefully and, actually joyfully, to compete. National pride and sovereignty as well as individual skill and prowess is on display.

The Olympics is for people like me who like sports, watching skill in action, the human drama of individuals striving for and reaching life-long goals, and fun in general.

If that doesn’t do it for you, then just remember, the Olympics cerebrates national sovereignty, distinction, and identity which are major factors in the existence of individual freedom in the world - obviously in some nations more than others.

The Do-gooder and Delusional Left doesn’t like national pride and distinction because that gets in the way of their dream of Worldwide Totalitarian Government, which is why they don’t like the U.S and want to blur the competitive edge between nations in the Olympics.

If you have zero interest in any of those things, then go find something in which you are interested.

As popular as the Oscars. Loved the roaring crowds of empty stadiums with A few Japanese in the dtands. Wondering who they were routing for?

8 Aug: UK Daily Mail: Olympics TV ratings plummet by 49% compared to 2016 games amid ‘woke’ protests and pandemic lockdowns
There has been a significant decline in Olympic viewership this year compared to previous games
NBC has seen ‘underwhelming ratings’ for the Tokyo Olympics, likely fueled by backlash from athletes protesting the American flag and national anthem
14.7 million viewers tuned into the Tokyo games during primetime on July 26, a decrease of 49 percent and 53 percent in 2016 and 2012 respectively
The opening ceremonies also saw the lowest viewership since 1988
A recent poll revealed that participants attributed their lack of interest in the games to protests and the coronavirus pandemic

Many posters - patriots - will hate me for this, but I think in fairness it’s not surprising if a country with a larger population wins more medals. And the USA has one of the largest populations. So I have done some quick calculations to adjust the medal count for population size, and based on that the tiny countries of the Bahamas, San Marino and Bermuda do the best. If my calculations are correct, the USA falls back into the middle of the nearly 100 countries which won medals, but looks more respectable when you consider that just over 200 countries participated. If it’s any consolation, China, with its enormous population, does even worse.

I presume you did your calculations (post #39) based on the total medals. I did both that and the weighted medal count (5 for gold and 3 for silver), and the USA did slightly better with the latter (8 places higher).

However, I used the population figures from Worldometer, and there were a few discrepancies which, to save time, I didn’t adjust for (Kosovo, Korea, Puerto Rico and Turkmenistan), so my figures might be slightly out (which is why I haven’t included them), which probably accounts for the small differences between your figures and mine.

That link shows it both ways, total medals and weighted totals. I think the USA moved up from 59th to 50th after weighting.

As to the other question somebody posed about athletes for various countries having some training in the USA (during their college years mostly) this is true of Canadian track medallists in recent years but not for the rest of the team, they tend to stay home and train in Canada in sports like rowing and cycling where we’ve done well.

At the end of the day the national programs are probably fairly comparable to each other, a lot depends on the talent pool, you could have the best coaching and training but if you don’t have world class athletes they aren’t going to win medals at the Olympics.

Personally I think the IOC should ban China, if they think Russia is a bad country and have to compete under the Olympic Committee banner, then what about this slave-labor organ-harvesting dictatorship — they should not be invited nor should they be hosting Olympics. They have some great athletes but you have to wonder what pressures or threats are placed on them, and the coaches.

“That link shows it both ways, total medals and weighted totals. I think the USA moved up from 59th to 50th after weighting.”

Thanks for your reply, but I am a little puzzled. I think the link you are referring to is the original post, which also shows totals weighted by the greater importance of gold and silver medals, but I haven’t seen any lists, other than your own (#39), showing the rankings weighted by population size - per capita.

You probably already realize this, but you posted your list while I was still busy doing my calculations, so I made my post (#45) without having seen yours, otherwise it would have been slightly different.

I didn’t post my figures/lists as I expected they were slightly inaccurate (because of the discrepancies I mentioned in my second post (#47)). And there might be differences in population size: I used 34,009 for San Marino, whereas you used 11,310*3=33,930.

My first list, weighted by population but not medal value, showed the USA at 58th, compared to your 59th (confirming my figures are slightly inaccurate); but my second list, weighted by both population and medal value, showed the USA at 50th - so the same as yours.
