Correct, before a vaccine was available people were dying at a much faster pace than they are now...now that a majority of people are vaccinated in most states, the deaths have dropped dramatically.

I remember the deaths dropping prior to the introduction of the vaccine. Otoh, the death rate always has been very low. Compare the stats for covid and for heart or cancer.
