I’m really surprised this is the first gold for the Japanese.

I didn’t watch either - not one minute of the Olympics , and I’m in Japan . Hate to say it but I hope that the Japanese women pull off a miracle tomorrow and beat the “ woke “ US women’s basketball team for the gold .

When will 12 ounce curls become an Olympic event?

Didn’t watch it, or any of the Olympics, but looked up the score. Japan 2-0 over USA. Congrats Japan.

You clearly haven’t paid a bit of attention to the olympics. Its anything but what you think it is.

To be honest, I misread it as basketball.

I haven’t. I don’t follow sports at all and have long hated the way the American media broadcasts the olympics. It’s easier to just ignore it.

The Americans played well all things considered. Correct if wrong, but the Japanese NPB recessed in mid July so players could compete in the Olympics. MLB was not going to do that, with the risk of high value players being injured, or COVID-19 issues, etc.

Not to worry. The US women’s soccer team lost focus in the field and they did not prevail. Not sorry about that one.

Yeah, USA Baseball prolly the most patriotic of all the US teams.

They did well to get the Silver and played against Japan’s best all star team of pros.

The US rules, doesn’t allow MLB stars or even anybody on the 40 man roster to play. Our team came from 2 pots...1) prospects (mostly 2nd tier except 1, Tristan Casas 2) ageing veterans who can’t make MLB rosters like Todd Frazier and 3) Career journeyman on AAA teams aged 25-28.

They played well against the Japanese. After the US Team, I was rooting for the home team Japanese to win their first Baseball Gold.

“I was rooting for the home team Japanese to win their first Baseball Gold.”

While it may be our “national game,” baseball is now a distant third in US viewership.

In Japan it remains #1, and it is nice to see that enthusiasm for the game rewarded at the Olympics.

Over the years, Japan has gone from "They're gonn'a take over the USA" to one of our strongest allies in the Far East.

Their Jap transistors were the last electronic wave in America as they quickly picked up the electronic know how of IBM, Honeywell and a few others that went over there to take advantage of cheap labor,

Being Asian smart, they focused on the internal combustion engine and now make damned good cars and motorcycles

The Japanese thanks us for giving them technology and did NOT stick it up our asses like China is doing now

And Shohei Ohtani has single-handedly got a lot people interested in baseball again.
