Oh good, I was going to ask if he was an American or a socialist. Good to hear he’s a proud American.

Guess the NBC handlers controlling the athletes have told them to pretend to love America, or else ratings will be even worse than they are now.

Cheers for the great American wrestler!

Jeers for the horrible US women’s soccer team.

Not all of the US athletes are like the women’s soccer team and those two clowns from our track and field team.

In fact, many of our medal winners are making it loud and clear about their belief in God and/or their pride in being an American.

For a guy who says he doesn’t care about the Olympics, you sure spend a lot of time responding to Olympic threads.

He, Zain, and Bo Nickal were my favorites to watch through PSU - and there were certainly another dozen or so that were great.

They always just brought it when it meant the most. Every single time.

Both wrestlers top notch, American was more aggressive, maybe a hair stronger. Very impressive.

Gable Steveson did even better, coming from behind to score with less than one second left to win the gold!

The most amazing thing I’ve ever seen on a wrestling mat.

I’ve seen Zain and diakomihalis wrestling. Very different animals and great wrestling.

I wrestled back in the late 60’s and early 70’s in Virginia. Didn’t go to Granby in Norfolk but rather in wrestled in northern VA and went to Granby camps. learned the granby roll. that was pretty sophisticated for the time. I still see Bo Nickal work it into his repetoir.

But by and large, I’m seeing moves from wrestlers today that were simply unimaginable 50 years ago. That is wrestlers comfortably move in dimensions wrestlers of my day could not have imagined—especially on defense. During my day—defense was a sprawl and wizzer. Now these guys go upside down and backwards with ease.

The one trainable skill that I think has been lost—is getting out from bottom. Over and over again, I see guys on bottom stay planted on bottom after the whistle blows to start. Rather they should be blasting out from bottom. Safest route out is an inside leg stand up followed by a pivot inside. But sit outs are ok too.

the most shocking match was kyle dake’s loss. the margin of loss and his commanding consolation final win the next day—suggest to me that he got disoriented and lost his focus going into the losing match. that is, he lost that match rather than the other guy won the match.

Interesting that both taylor and gable won gold with come from behind wins. gable’s win especially was amazing. He scored two take downs in something like 25 seconds. and then the came the hand stand and summersault. that stuff is beloved. more interesting, like all the greats he knew he was there not just for his own personal glory but to put on a good show.

All people should have the kind of internal balance under pressure that great wrestlers have. Well maybe not. But I would sure love greater internal balance. I would be satisfied to stand on one foot with my eyes closed. Right now I can do that—but only with my eyes open.
