Landlord out $24,000 in rent due to eviction moratorium, says tenants buying boats

A North Carolina landlord says he is out $24,000 in unpaid rent from tenants, while one renter bought three boats over the course of the eviction moratorium just as the CDC announced a new ban that will last until October 3.

Buddy Shoup, who owns 35 properties across the state, said that he has been forced to maintain the properties and hemorrhage costs while the federal government slowly dribbles out rental assistance, of which only 7% has been doled out to renters in need.

‘[The money] was used, they went and bought brand new boats, but I mean, you know in a time of crisis like what we’ve been through, you’re evidently getting money from somewhere, but it’s not getting to me," said Shoup.

Those very same tenants allegedly contacted Shoup when their air-conditioning failed in the middle of the summer.

Shoup was legally required to make the $4,500 repair on the residence but said he did not receive any money from the tenants or the government to cover the additional cost.

"It goes way beyond the loss of rental income, we’re still bound by county rules and laws," added Shoup. "We have to maintain the property."

Shoup said that he oftentimes sends tenants who cannot pay rent to local programs, which are funded by city and county taxpayer dollars, in order to acquire some form of assistance.

Yet, when it comes to federal rental assistance, the North Carolina landlord said he hasn’t seen any indication that the money is reaching struggling renters.

This moratorium violates the takings clause.

I got away VERY “lucky”. I had only one tenant that did not pay. I managed to convince him to leave after a full year of non-payment. He had been a friend since childhood.

We rent. Never thought about not paying. In fact, in September of 2020, our landlord raised our rent.

Air con only MAYBE but it’s probably a POS Haier or equivalent unit good for 2 years tops! A half decent Trane a/c only will cost you $2-4K easily. An HVAC unit is better than double that.

You are LONG in the past if you think your numbers make a lick of sense. Or you are abroad, where certain levels of quality and production do not apply, and the cheap chyneez crapola is the norm?

Some of our properties are rental units. One is a single family with 14 people (Mexicans) in it... They moved on and they left. House was clean.. One left a note saying thank you.

Amazing about renters - you can get bad or great renters... We had bad renters, too.

Snapper head ain't payin' on those boats either ... that's when a friend of a friend of a friend magically finds out where to repossess them ....

Don’t worry. Blackstone will be happy to buy your properties at a discount. And of course, the big guy gets his cut.

My neighbors all got new HVACs for around 5500. I’m due but the things still working. It is 17 years old.

You’re in for an unpleasant shock when you decide it’s time to replace it.

$5500 for a 3 ton heat pump would be typical around here also, assuming the air handler is suitable.

That’s a reasonable price, if it’s both heating and A/C. I am looking at close to $6K to help my mother out in the middle of nowhere, hot and coldville Canada
