George Washington had small pox in 1751 while in Barbados with his brother Lawrence. It was well known by 1763.
Smallpox was well known, but how it was spread was not.
The British did wish they could spread it to the Native tribes but did not know how. Unfortunately they accidentally did it with the blankets.
