Early in his career, the actor Bill Murray was depressed, mulling suicide, and walking around Chicago when he wandered into the Art Institute. There, he came across a painting that saved his life: The Song of the Lark (1884) by the French painter Jules Breton, as he explained at a 2014 press conference that has suddenly begun circulating online. (The event was for The Monuments Men, in which he stars.)
The painting shows a girl lost in thought, taking a break from working in a dimly lit field with a sickle.
Murray: “I thought, ‘Well, there’s a girl who doesn’t have a whole lot of prospects, but the sun’s coming up anyway and she’s got another chance at it. So I think that gave me some sort of feeling that I, too, am a person, and I get another chance every day the sun comes up.”
As it happens, the Breton is on view at the museum now, in Gallery 222, where it perhaps feels a bit overshadowed by works from bigger names, like Manet, Courbet, and Constable. No longer!

Well after caddying for the Dalai Lama (Big hitter the Dalai) he felt he was going to be stiffed on a tip he asked
“Hey, Lama, hey, how about a little something, you know, for the effort, you know.” And he says, “Oh, uh, there won’t be any money, but when you die, on your deathbed, you will receive total consciousness.” So I got that goin’ for me, which is nice.
Whatever time of the day it is, I’m thinking “Did I forget to turn off the oven”
“Is that a weather balloon, or is it a UFO?
Seriously, it’s a beautiful painting, and I can see how Bill could have gotten inspiration from it. Good for him.
By the way, that song Jerry Lewis used to sing at the end of the Telethon had the lyrics “the song of the Meadowlark”……
Yes. Yes! Andrew Wyeth.
Thx.
Well I see it as back stage at a sunset
By how tensed up her arms are and how she is holding the sickle, I’d say she is getting ready for trouble to arrive…
Especially the scene with Bill Murray...:)
Just hilarious!
She sees Fauxi at the edge of the field!
She looks like she is going after her husband after he forgot their wedding anniversary.... again.
I disagree with Murray’s assessment that the girl “doesn’t have a whole lot of prospects.”
I would be just as happy living on a deserted island a thousand years ago alone with a woman whom I loved as I would be in any technological society, regardless of wealth.
What brings happiness is the perception that you are actively moving towards a goal, and that you are authentically truthful to yourself and those around you.
We now live in a society that is being drawn into a state of universal deceit, where one must act cautiously when considering to whom he speaks, lest the truth stir up a nest of self-deceivers.
It looks more like a young pregnant girl from Ukraine who is looking for Hunter Biden...
Same here. A simple life can be the very best life of all.
There are way too many people who waste their entire lives chasing material things. It is never enough. I have a friend who recently bought a luxury car and then he was immediately kicking himself when the new model came out with a couple more bells and whistles. Now he wants to trade his new car in for the newer model!
In the end, you take none of that stuff with you.
I've learned to appreciate a lazy afternoon sitting on my porch reading a good book - that I borrowed for free from the library!
