Norwegian Karsten Warholm's spectacular run to shatter his own 400-metre hurdles world record at the Olympics on Tuesday – winning gold in just 45.94 seconds – was the latest instance of “super shoes” speeding athletes forward. Experts say this innovation will continue to radically change the landscape of track and road running.
A mass of not only new world records, but also a slew of national records and startling personal bests since the 2016 Rio Olympics show athletes are thriving on new technology that has pushed the biomechanics of the running shoe to a new level.
When the Olympic athletics programme started in Tokyo on July 30, some athletes were wearing the super-light shoes that contain a rigid plate and unique foam that lend a propulsive sensation to every stride.
Critics claim the shoes, first developed by Nike, are the equivalent of mechanical doping, while supporters hail them as a revolutionary advance after decades of stagnation.

I just want sneakers that will help my heels not to hurt. Had one pair way back when, can’t remember brand now, but they were fantastic,. Went to buy so e more, and nope, they stopped making them. Haven’t found a good pair since. Some start out kind of good, but w
Quickly lose their cushioning. I don’t even bother looking anymore, just get the cheapo ones now, and use inserts, but those aren’t quite enough cushion
Doubt any shoe is going to make my trip out to the mailbox any faster.
“He just spent 14 million bucks on a mansion on Nantucket.”
Try adding a little memory foam material, say, 1/4 inch, under the heel part of the inserts, or maybe above them.
It’ll have to be pretty stiff material. I used memory foam inserts, but they quickly give way to the point that my heels drive into the hard surface below. My heels are thin, kinda pointed, and over the years have caused a lot of pain. I do not stand a lot these days, which helps a lot, but woild like to be able to hike without the pain at the end.
I’ll check and see if there a
Is some kind of stiffer foam material, and cut out my own inserts if there is. There must be because the sneakers I bought before were excellent, and lasted a good long time
Lol, or to the kitchen for me 😆
Running itself is stupid
Try riding a bicycle or swimming
Or hiking or powerwalking
Or any number of other ways to stay in shape to do not involve punishing your knees ankles and shins
Innovation is the product of good marketing. In all sports there have been changes to equipment that changed the contest, some good and some bad. And many that were outlawed by the ruling factions of each sport as it was determined to be too advantages.
Pine tar amounts on baseball bats, (and pitchers fingers). Drivers in golf or a ball with the dimples set up to stop a curving shot. The amount of air in a football. Drugs made to enhance performance. These are a few of the negatives.
There will always be someone wishing to profit from a product designed to give an athlete a step up. And there will always be athletes taking that step. It’s just money.
Some of the steps should be considered criminal. But they won’t if it produces greenbacks, or whatever the color is for their spending change.

marketing hyperbole
I don’t run, never have. I hike mostly for exercise. My heels bother me though if I have to stand even for any length of time. For walking, I have on ‘OK’ pair of walking shoes, but they stil. Hurt after awhile.
I think some of,it might be due to fibromyalgia, causing a heightened sense of pain. It’s miserable. There isn’t anything on ‘
X-rays to indicate issues with the heel.

My best advice then, aside from keeping on the lookout for better inserts or shoes, is to frequently replace the memory foam and perhaps double the thickness. You’ve probably tried the gel inserts.
You’d think one of those “Health feet” stores would have something.
Not a track and field aficionado by any stretch of the imagination, but I did find Warholm’s gait to be a bit odd. Now I’m wondering if it is due to this new type shoe.
Some regular maker of Oxford shoes make them especially for people with heel spurs. My late husband had a pair and they cured his heel spurs. Sorry I don’t recall the name of them.

I’ve been running for ~45 years and my knees and ankles are just fine. Shin splints are normal when you just start out and/or run on hard surfaces (e.g. concrete). I do cringe when i see people running on sidewalks when softer surfaces are available. Then there was the MIT grad i knew who ran in combat boots. I suspect he developed knee and ankle problems.
Running is not as fun as it used to be now that i’m dramatically slower. So i also mountain bike and hike a lot and the variety helps.
