That is commonly seen in animals.
The beta male has lower testosterone than the alpha. When that beta becomes the alpha, his testosterone rises to the alpha level.
Maybe it is the female attention/interaction that stimulates it.
As I posted earlier, testosterone is a lagging indicator, not a leading one................
