Muswell Hillbillies was a great album. On 20th Century Man Dave gets to rock.

Lifelong Kinks fan. Knew You Really Got Me and All Day All of the Night as a young kid but the game changer was this album (Muswell Hillbillies). Never looked back (and yes Kinks reference intenional).

Muswell Hillbillies was a great concept, great writing, but the way the record “sounds” - it has this gritty yet melodic sound that I just love.

The concept is multilayered. It’s a play on the Beverly Hillbillies. It’s a British take on American C & W but not a literal take. It’s autobiographical. And it’s anti urban renewal. And it’s populated by all these special Rau Davies characters.

Saw them live in 1980. Rowdiest concert I have ever attended. Robert Palmer opened. Was the 1st time I saw punk rockers in person.

The Sopranos used the live version and they used it after my all-time favorite Sopranos scene.

“I wonder what’s French-Canadian for ‘I grew up without a Mother’?”

“Sacre bleu, where is me mama?”

My favorite is Celluloid Heroes

Beat me to it. I always thought of this song whenever I would would walk down the Hollywood Walk of Fame and see all the stars along the pavement. "Some that you recognize, and some that you never even heard of..."

“Days”

Thank you for the days,
Those endless days, those sacred days you gave me.
I’m thinking of the days,
I won’t forget a single day, believe me.

I bless the light,
I bless the light that lights on you believe me.
And though you’re gone,
You’re with me every single day, believe me.

Days I’ll remember all my life,
Days when you can’t see wrong from right.
You took my life,
But then I knew that very soon you’d leave me,
But it’s all right,
Now I’m not frightened of this world, believe me.

I wish today could be tomorrow,
The night is dark,
It just brings sorrow anyway.

Thank you for the days,
Those endless days, those sacred days you gave me.
I’m thinking of the days,
I won’t forget a single day, believe me.

Days I’ll remember all my life,
Days when you can’t see wrong from right.
You took my life,
But then I knew that very soon you’d leave me,
But it’s all right,
Now I’m not frightened of this world, believe me.
Days.

Thank you for the days,
Those endless days, those sacred days you gave me.
I’m thinking of the days,
I won’t forget a single day, believe me.

I bless the light,
I bless the light that shines on you believe me.
And though you’re gone,
You’re with me every single day, believe me.
Days.

And it has the only song by a British Invasion band that mentions a member of the Partridge Family. [Shirley Jones, in “Oklahoma USA”]
