Chicago's new civilian oversight panel further hinders police officers amid shooting surge, critics say

Critics argue a new plan pushed through by Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot and city council Wednesday after 11th-hour negotiations to establish a new civilian oversight panel aimed to increase accountability of law enforcement misconduct will only make it harder for Chicago police to do their jobs.

The embattled president of Chicago’s Fraternal Order of Police, John Catanzara, told the Chicago Tribune that the controversial civilian oversight panel approved by city council along a 36-13 vote Wednesday is "absolutely absurd and dangerous and reckless," arguing it hands too much power to "the squeaky wheels who made this city into anarchy last summer."

Alderman Anthony Napolitano, who represents the 41st Ward on Chicago’s Far Northwest Side, also criticized the oversight panel, claiming its design will not encourage members of the community to talk to police officers, but instead the added bureaucracy will only make it hard for police to do their jobs. It also will discourage new officers from joining the force, as the department has already struggled to recruit.

"This new committee, this 12th layer of police oversight, is going to make every potential police officer think about going in another direction," Napolitano told the Tribune.

But proponents argue that regular Chicagoans have never before been given a direct seat at the table when it comes to police misconduct, making the civilian oversight panel a groundbreaking and transformative concept separate from oversight already provided by the Civilian Office of Police Accountability and Bureau of Internal Affairs, Politico reported.

"Kids in my neighborhoods’ first interaction with police should not be on the hood of the car," said Alderman Jason Ervin, who represents the 28th Ward and is chair of the council Black Caucus.(snip)

Lightfoot, in announcing its approval Wednesday, stressed that the plan has been years in the making,

Every member of that “oversight” committee should be forced to ride with the police for a month in the worse part of Chiraq.

“Civilian Review Boards” were a precursor to this retread idea, going back to the mid 20th century.. They were a disaster then and will be a disaster now. Guaranteed to make the crime problem worse.

Sorry but the CPD needed oversight. They brought this on with their secret precinct, endless wrongful no-knock raids, and numerous sometimes violent coverups when CPD wrongfully killed people.

You’d think just living in Chiraq would be enough for anyone with a pulse and oriented x 3.

“Kids in my neighborhoods’ first interaction with police should not be on the hood of the car,”

Then your kids shouldn’t be criminals.

So Light in the Loafers Lori said that the civilian police panel “had been years in the making”.

So was her insanity and it too was deliberate.

Who says that insanity doesn’t pay? Just look at DeBlasio (and his family of reds), Cuomo and his mafia-configured family and administration, Witless in Michigan, Pritzker and Lightfoot in Chicago/Illinoismm, Mayor Bowwow Bowser in DC, Garcetti in LA, Gascon in LA, Boudin in SF, the woman mayor of Seattle and Wash State’s insane governor; and the gov. of Oregon and mayor Wheeler of Portland.

If these aren’t classic cases of both Marxist and fascist power-hungry at any cost maniacs/lunatic ideologues, then Freud, Fromm, Hoffer and Dr. Pinsky were all wrong.

Either they are crazy or I am and the last time I checked,, like Mel Gibson said in the first “Lethal weapon” to Danny Glover, “I’m not crazy”.

Why? They could t care less. They aren’t the ones effected by these policies. I wonder how many actually live in the areas they represent.

Do you remember when they were interviewing folks in Newark and they all sows they’ve never seen him. At the time it was reported that he was actually living in Manhattan.

Maxine Waters doesn’t live in hers.

At the end of the day the folks that will be most effected by these policies are the ones that voted for the Alderman that are allowing this.

When someone is elected to one of those positions and the people rose up contesting the election because no one voted for the person, will things change.

Outside of that, let them eat the sh*t sandwich they made themselves.

AFAIC the very first experience for these kids should be spread-eagle on the hood of a cop car. Maybe that'd give 'em second thoughts.

And if not, just shoot their hoodlum asses!
