The Monthly Fiber Arts Thread is a monthly gathering of people that love yarn and fabric of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first project, to experienced fiber artists and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
It is impossible to hijack the Monthly Fiber Arts Thread. Knitting, crochet, quilting, weaving, general crafting - there is no telling where it will go, and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our Fiber Arts Ping List.
NOTE: This is a once a Month Ping List. We do post to the thread during the month. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Fiber Arts fans are welcomed any time!
The bobbin is most fitting, the only fiber stuff I have going on is I crocheted a long narrow sack of cotton yarn for my garlic to hang in. And I am taking in my bathing suit I bought last summer, too big, some hand sewing and some machine work.
I’m “plotting revenge” and it’s generally ‘fiber arts’ related, but not specifically scissor related .... grrrr.
Anyway, I’ll get some pics together of what I’m working on & post later. Power is out right now & we’re on generator power ... too stressed out to deal with posting pics!
Thanks for the thread!
I tried to learn how to tat yesterday. I had to withdraw from the event due to the mental health aspect of it. Somebody was likely to get hurt.
See if I tatted I suppose I could make some homemade lace to use on the dress above. As it is I use store bought notions.
Have you tried yoyos? Great way to use up small fabric.
I use fabric scissors to cut up pizza. (But not for anything else but the pizza. They’re awesome that way!)
Can Baby Yoda and I be friends before he kills me?
No bobbins until I get moved.
For now, it’s just balls and balls of size 10 crochet thread! I just finished a square pineapple table topper, and I’m sorry but I don’t know how to post photos, yet.
As soon as I learn, I’ll post them!
Thanks for the ping!

No I have not gotten into Yo yos yet. How do use them? On a quilt?
I’ll message you with my home e-mail and you can send whatever pictures you want posted to me and I’ll do it for you! :)
That goes for everyone here! :)
That’s between You, Baby Yoda and your Maker, LOL!
Speak for him, I will not! :)
Thanks! What a generous offer!
Also in needle felt.
I made one yoyo bedspread - 1500 or 1600 yoyos. I forget.
Have made purses with a liner behind, used as decorations on other regular quilts, dresser scarves, clown dolls with jingle bell ends, vests. My mom loved using scraps for yoyos.
Yoyos were very popular in the depression. Not much got thrown away. If a shirt got so worn and ripped, the good parts were cut out for yoyos. An old neighbor (long gone) had a 90 year old mother who most of her life got old wool garments, cut the good parts out into rectangles, blanket stitched each one with yarn and then put them together for blankets. I still have a lap blanket she gave me.
The one below is the one I'm entering in our County Fair this season. It is called 'Lakota Dreams' and the turquoise color is MUCH brighter in real life. I'm glad I checked the Iowa County Fair website because TODAY was the deadline for entries. I'm all registered; #549 destined for my SECOND Blue Ribbon! I'm expecting more competition this year in the Senior Open Class; in 2020 I was the only entry, so I won, LOL! 🙂
Last year's winning entry was 'Sun, Sea & Sand.' Same pattern but with tropical ocean blues and some 'sparkle' where the sea meets the shore. The pattern is 'Spectrum' from Caron Simply Soft. I made the first one for my Sister at her request in the bright colors shown at the link below. This afghan is the 5th one I've made in this pattern. It's sturdy in a half-double crochet stitch, and also warm, but not too warm, so a good all-season blanket, if that makes any sense.
“Yoyos were very popular in the depression.”
I need to post a picture of a simple quilt my Grandma Edith made. I’m almost certain the ‘batting’ is old bath towels.
Talk about using up EVERY scrap of fabric! But, it’s such a JOY to me because it has fabric scraps from so many of the clothes we all wore ‘back in the day’ from Mom, Dad, G & G, Sis & Me. I will cherish it always - but it won’t mean a thing to anyone else, other than maybe my Sister. It hangs in my Dining Room. I smile every time I see it - about a dozen times a day!
Which, if you’re doing it RIGHT, IS the ‘magic’ of Fiber Arts! :)
