TYLER, Texas (KETK) – ZZ Top announced one of their members passed away in his sleep Wednesday.
Dusty Hill, the bassist and secondary lead vocalist of the band, died in his Houston home at age 72.
“We, along with legions of ZZ Top fans around the world, will miss your steadfast presence, your good nature and enduring commitment to providing that monumental bottom to the ‘Top’,” the band said in a Facebook post. “We will forever be connected to that “Blues Shuffle in C.”

To me, Eliminator didn’t age as well as their vintage 70s stuff.
One night in the late nineties, my wife and I went into the just closing dining room and asked if we could have dinner late. They said yes because their kitchen was “going to be open late.” We ordered and were sitting by ourselves with no one else in the whole dining room.
In walked ZZ Top and their wives and/or lady friends. Sat down across the small open floor area and were having a very late dinner after their performance elsewhere in town. We felt like flies on the wall listening to their winding down — all quite decorous. After a half hour or so we finished and paid and they waved and nodded as we got up to leave just as if we were acquainted. Very cordial.
From last Friday.....
Sounds like they were planning on him coming back, soon.
Probably my favorite song, Dusty sang lead on...
Balinese

“Party at the Moon Tower!”
THAT is a keeper....Zee Zee Top.....performed for the prom.
Love it.
Still have my original Tres Hombres album.
Great ZZ Top story!
He had bought Sheryl Crows estate not far from me ....he sold it in three years for double...
Great three man band...
Me too....I feel like I know Ruby..lol
Saw ZZ at the Orange Fairgrounds in San Bernardino CA. Pretty sure 1980 on the Degüello Tour (Cheap Sunglasses) I was about 15 feet in front of Billy Gibbons when early into one song he blew out his high E string. The guy didn’t miss a note working his leads on just five strings, I was impressed.
The band should have at least tossed poor Linden Hudson a bone for his efforts.
That is some fascinating background. I wish Gibbons would give a more complete telling of his side of the story now that Hudson has gone public. OTOH it wouldn’t surprise me if there were NDAs involved, so he may be limited in what he can say.
Here’s Hudson showing up in the comments section of a music blog in 2018 saying some interesting things:

He also has a Flickr page.
Billy Gibbons made the first ZZ Top single with two different guys, but the Gibbons/Hill/Beard trio has been in place since 1970. That's enough to make ZZ Top the longest-running group with an unchanged line-up in the entire history of popular music.
I some how neglected to include that it was in a Ritz Carlton hotel which made the setting all the more interesting.
A friend worked at a hotel and served Frank Zappa in an empty dining room, either before or after a show. He said he didn't say a word.
Awesome song.
My wife and I saw them in Houston on New Years Eve 1999.
Lynyrd Skynyrd opened for them. Hell of a show.
I noted also that earlier this year, Golden Earring called it quits, they started in 1961, and their lineup hadn’t changed since 1970.
OK, so a matter of opinion drove the narrative there. I’ll agree Jack was a great player, Dusty was good. Hardly in the same category though. There are other 3 piece bands that have suffered the same or similar losses, probably more recently as well.
To me, I would’ve argued: first Neil Peart, then this...
Peart’s passing was a huge blow to Rush though, one they will never recover from as a band - just like Bonham’s death: Zeppelin. so even this isn’t a great comparison because ZZ will move on without Dusty - or will be able to more readily, however the impact to the fan base is probably similar and the death more recent and in line with the initial comment.
To each their own.
Also, I’, just explaining why I found the comment so “out there” in this regard. None of the above is really meant as an admonishment.
” ZZ will move on without Dusty”
Rev. Billy F. Gibbons is 71 and Frank is 72. While they will undoubtedly play a bit, they aren’t Keith Richard (I guess he’s calling himself Richards in his old age). ZZ is on it’s last legs.
Note: Watch BFG’s left hand while he plays. It doesn’t move much. If you had to put a graphic next to the word “cool” in the dictionary, it would be a photo of BFG.
