The "Serendipity Sapphire" weighs 2.5 million carats.
A massive sapphire cluster worth as much as $100 million has been unearthed by workers digging a well in the backyard of a Sri Lankan home, authorities said.
“The person who was digging the well alerted us about some rare stones. Later we stumbled upon this huge specimen,” the owner, who only wanted to be identified by his last name Gamage, told the outlet.
“I have never seen such a large specimen before. This was probably formed around 400 million years ago,” Dr. Gamini Zoysa, a top gemmologist, told the BBC.
“Given the size and its value, we think it will interest private collectors or museums.”

Certainly the biggest find ever.
Good thing I didn’t find that in my yard, I would have just figured it out to be a big rock and put it out by the road........
The first thing you do when you find a treasure in your back yard is shut your mouth. So many times someone finds some stash of gold coins only for some government bureaucrat to confiscate it. This guy in Sri Lanka’s days are numbered. That place is so crooked the government is just going to eliminate him and seize the property.
That is too large and heavy to hide from the gov’t. Now about the 2 and 3 pounders he found....

My neighbor found something in his back yard. Something that was not found in a national park where all found things belong to the government. It was iron nickel, and bought them a new car.
Why stop there? Maybe the government can fine them.
Did they have all of the permits?
That is bigger than the one I found in my back yard.
That kind of find can depress sapphire prices over the whole world!
Not exactly gem grade. The only thing it has going for it is sheer size.

That’s a helluva coprolite. That guy needed a 5 gallon jerry can of mineral oil to deliver that one.
Saphire for $40/ct? Sounds like a deal!
