High doses of vitamin D rapidly reduce arterial stiffness in overweight/obese, vitamin-deficient African-Americans

In just four months, high-doses of vitamin D reduce arterial stiffness in young, overweight/obese, vitamin-deficient, but otherwise still healthy African-Americans, researchers say.

Rigid artery walls are an independent predictor of cardiovascular- related disease and death and vitamin D deficiency appears to be a contributor.

In what appears to be the first randomized trial of its kind, they found that arterial stiffness was improved by vitamin D supplementation in a dose-response manner in this population, they write in the journal PLOS ONE.

Participants taking 4,000 international units -- more than six times the daily 600 IUs the Institute of Medicine currently recommends for most adults and children -- received the most benefit.

The dose, now considered the highest, safe upper dose of the vitamin by the Institute of Medicine, reduced arterial stiffness the most and the fastest: 10.4 percent in four months. "It significantly and rapidly reduced stiffness," Raed says.

Two thousand IUs decreased stiffness by 2 percent in that timeframe. At 600 IUs, arterial stiffness actually increased slightly -- .1 percent -- and the placebo group experienced a 2.3 percent increase in arterial stiffness over the timeframe.

The Institute of Medicine currently recommends a daily intake of 800 IUs of vitamin D for those age 70 and older. For adolescents and adults, they recommend 4,000 IUs as the upper daily limit; 2,000 was a previous upper limit.

More than 80 percent of Americans, the majority of whom spend their days indoors, have vitamin D insufficiency or deficiency.

Will Vitamin D also help with Moderna worms in your blood ?

I’ve done the vitamin D Hammer twice.

Worked both times.

In the box on the left side of the screen, look for "Altitude:"

The sun's altitude must be 50 degrees or higher to allow the vitamin D absorption affect.

At lower than 50 degrees, the sun's angle of incidence to the atmosphere bounces the good UV rays off.

You wrote: Vit D3 helps with chronic urticaria (hives) - dose is 4,000 IU daily. I have this issue - take 5K daily. This usually keeps hives away, but if they do occur, another 10K generally resolves the issue without an antihistamine.

Thank you so much for this! I have had been having trouble with hives during the summer and fall for 3 or 4 years now and it has been an embarrassing mess, intense random itching.

There is always a lot of discussion about how much vitamin D (D3) people take. However, the amount a person takes is not the issue. The issue is what is the vitamin D level in your blood?

We need to supplement with whatever amount we need in order to maintain an optimal vitamin D level. A person who is very deficient may need to take large amounts to build up the vitamin D level in his/her blood. Someone who is mildly deficient may be able to bring the level to optimal by supplementing at a lower level.

I supplemented with 5000 IU per day for several years. Finally I got my doctor to have my blood level checked. I discovered that I was STILL borderline low! My wife and I are now taking 10,000 IU per day (when not out in the sun for prolonged periods), and our levels are optimal. (BTW, we are elderly, we are not sick, and haven't been sick for years).

Yes, it is quite possible to get too much Vitamin D from supplements, but not from sunlight. Creation is amazing!

Here’s the link where I saw the D3 for hives:

https://www.drweil.com/health-wellness/body-mind-spirit/allergy-asthma/had-it-with-hives/

The latest I’ve seen on treatment for chronic hives comes from the University of Nebraska Medical Center where researchers found that adding vitamin D3 supplements to a combination of allergy medications (one prescription and two over-the-counter drugs) could provide relief for patients who had experienced severe chronic hives for five to 20 years. Some had been treated medically and some had not. Standard therapy for chronic hives is to control symptoms with antihistamines and other allergy medications. Many of these are expensive, and some have significant side effects, the team leader noted.

For the study, half of the 38 patients participating took 600 IUs of vitamin D3 daily while the other half took 4,000 IUs. The researchers reported that after just one week, the severity of symptoms decreased by 33 percent for both groups of patients. However, at the end of three months, those taking 4,000 IUs of vitamin D3 had a further 40 percent decrease in severity of their hives, while after the first week, no further improvement occurred in the patients taking the lower dose.

The researchers termed the study results “a significant improvement,” and noted that the higher dose of readily available vitamin D3 could be considered a safe and potentially beneficial therapy. They wrote that those patients taking the higher dose of D3 also had less severe hives during the study – they didn’t have as many hives, and reported a decrease in the number of days a week they had outbreaks.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++=

I still get hives, but not like I used to & often, an extra dose of Vit D3 will take care of them without resorting to an antihistamine. I do not use Benadryl (dementia risk) but Fexofenadine. Fexo does not work for everyone, but I do get relief.

Also, when you take Vit D3, you should also take K2. Here’s a link that explains why:

https://info.dralexrinehart.com/articles/vitamin-d-and-vitamin-k2-benefits-connection

Vitamin D controls the absorption of calcium into the blood. Vitamin K2 controls where that calcium ends up.

You want calcium going to your bones, not your arteries.

Is Vitamin-D racist?

Why doesn’t it rapidly reduce arterial stiffness in overweight/obese, vitamin-deficient white folks too?

We are no longer outside farming and working all day. Gotta supplement.

It is hard to overdose on given the body could make quite a bit on its own all day in the sun.

Blacks have by far America’s worst diet. That puts them in extreme disadvantage when they get sick with things like Covid, flu, bronchitis, COPD, etc. They have by far the highest rates of heart disease, diabetes, etc. SO MUCH of how long you will live and your quality of life is just what you eat.
